“Could be a Hogwarts Stand In”
Reviewed July 13, 2013

Part of PITT, the CoL is the tallest landmark in Pittsburgh.
Basically, offices and study areas for Pitt students, it is however, open to the public, which is totally worthwhile.
The inside could easily have you believe that you are in Hogwarts. Tall stone pillars and columns, along with open Great Rooms (and appropriate wooden tables and benches) make you believe that Headless Harry or Moaning Myrtle will come swooping around the corner at any moment.
This building alone would have me filling out an application to the university.
Make time to stop by and visit, even if you only have a day. It's fantastic.

“Old World Pittsburgh”

An amazing free attraction. The different Nationality Classrooms, which I understand are used for instruction, are remarkable. I would not be able to pay attention to the instructor if I took a class in one of them.

“An iconic building, fascinating interior”
Reviewed July 8, 2013

The Cathedral of Learning is PItt's iconic structure; it towers over the area and can be seen from anywhere in the Oakland area. It embodies traditional Western European academic architecture and academic traditions. The summer is probably the best time to tour, since you can see all the national classrooms. The $4 audio tour gives you information on the 18 first-floor international classrooms; there are six national classrooms on the third floor that have automated audio tracks. I found it interesting that the more recent rooms have far more lengthy audios, some of them bordering on excessive.
The rooms are beautifully appointed and I imagine that both instructors and students get accustomed to the settings, but the classrooms don't appear to be set up for electronic usage (regular blackboards; no whiteboards!) and some of the chairs would be uncomfortable--they're definitely not made for left-handers.
The large common room with its high, vaulted ceilings is dark even on sunny days.
I would love to see the building when it's inhabited by faculty and students. Definitely worth a visit. You can park at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument garage up the street and not have to worry about the on-street parking meter, which is a 4-hour limit.

The building is unique and interesting; had a gothic feel. The area surrounding the cathedral is nice and worth a visit.
