Well worth the small price to see the amazing view of Pittsburgh from the top! Ice cream parlor just a short walk from the incline. View is beautiful day or night.

While some locals still use the incline to get back and forth to work you will mostly find people from out of town who are simply curious. There are two inclines left in the country and they are both here. Its a short trip up a very steep hill on a very old track and car that seems like a large mining cart with a roof. If you start at the bottom in the Station Square area you will be rewarded at the top by the best views of Pittsburgh, heck its one of the best skyline views period! If you are in town and havent ridden the incline its a must do and its only a couple bucks.

Make sure you don't miss going up Mt. Washington on the Monongahela Incline. We had to wait a short while in the late afternoon, but it was worth it, and people were friendly. Takes only a few minutes to get up there, and then just enjoy the views and walk around the 'hood!

We had the opportunity of experiencing this incline during a volleyball tournament weekend. We filled 1/3 of the cart = friends, family and team-mates. What a blast...the view is amazing. Do yourself a favor...when you get to the top take a walk toward the houses, follow the signs as there are great places to grab a coffee, snack or even icecream.

P.S - you need to park at Station Square as there is NO parking at the station for this

I'm a transportation engineer, so I had to do this. It was a short ride, but pretty cool, especially since I lucked out and had a crystal clear day to explore Pittsburgh. For your consideration:

(1) The Pittsburgh Metro has a stop right near the bottom of the incline: Station Square
(2) When you get to the top, walk along the sidewalk with its many overlooks. There are great city views from the numerous vista points. Midday is when the sun is at your back, but the best light would be mid-morning and late-afternoon.
(3) The neighborhood at the top is pretty interesting also. There are several picturesque homes.
(4) On the way down, get in the lower level of the car. That way, you can get a good view (and photo) of the steep tracks as you descend.
