If you eat at Vallozzi's during lunch hour, especially for a special occasion, you will probably not be disappointed. The atmosphere is very adult with sophisticated furnishings, a beautiful Bar area, and a schooled Waitstaff (although our's DID spill French Press all over the tablecloth). None-the-less, our party of four enjoyed the generous Vegetable and Italian Paninis with Dressed Greens, hearty and delicious Minestrone, Gnocchi with Garlic Parmesian Sauce, and Crabcakes. All were meticulously prepared and presented. The rich, tender Pasta was priciest @$11.95 while the thick, fresh Sandwiches were just @$8.95 (all well within reason for quality of meal).
Vallozzi's Service was pleasant and attentive, even though we were four women who hadn't seen each other for almost a year and had a lot of catching up to do. It was a busy Holiday lunch crowd for them, but they didn't seem in any real hurry to get rid of us. Because of this largely positive experience, and the intriguing Menu, we will definitely return for Lunch.
At Dinner, their entree prices skyrocket into the $30+/per range, which is just outrageous at this point for the Pittsburgh market. Vallozzi's had better make up their minds what they want to be: a Good Solid Dining Choice in the Downtown area, or just another Tourist Trap. Meanwhile, if you're from out of town and want Dinner value, go to the Diamond Market Grill ("everyman" spot) or to Habitat (solid, but more upscale).
