Anyone who loves history should visit Clayton - a home frozen in time. It has been beautifully restored and the docents are wonderful.

It's hard to believe that it's free. In addition to the great art, there is also a carriage house that displays some excellent vintage modes of transportation.

We went to the Frick Art and Historical Center in Pittsburgh. One of the nice things about it that Clayton House, the home of the Fricks before they moved to New York, is almost perfectly preserved as a family home of the gilded age. The contents are all there, as used by the family, and it provides an interesting story as you go around the house with a docent. Our docent was great: knowledgeable, funny and kept us going, while making sure to answer all our questions.

The gem was the carriage and automobile collection housed in a nearby special purpose museum as part of the estate. It was terrific - the cars ( many of them gifted to the museum) were magnificent, and spanned from the late 1800's to the 1940's.

Oh, and the Frick Cafe, on the grounds, provided an excellent lunch in beautiful surroundings!

Well worth a visit.

The tour of this historic and beautifully restored home can be a wonderful addition to your visit to Pittsburgh. Tours are every hour and are guided by very knowledgeable docents that share their love of this place so well. Be sure to take in the carriage museum when you are there.

Like nearly everyone, we greatly enjoyed the docent-led tour of Clayton and seeing the Carriage and Car Museum. Both seem to be "must-see" for any visit to Pittsburgh. While lunch on the Frick grounds is no doubt wonderful, less well known is the stylish, friendly, neighborhood cafe but blocks away -- the Point Brugge Cafe. Wonderful mussels and frites, and a grand selection of beers.
