Absolutely enchanting displays. Well worth a visit for anyone who loves natural beauty as well as for gardeners looking for new plants to try out in the garden in the future.

It is amazing the variety of plants that they have and the way they present them. You can ser different colours, smell and shape of flower.

Phipps is one of my favorite Pittsburgh destinations. The conservatory is well maintained, and exhibits change frequently. My children all grew up visiting the Phipps several times each year in the winter as we battled cabin fever. The displays are beautiful, the plants lush and colorful, and the staff and volunteers very knowledgeable. In one afternoon, you can walk through a tropical rain forest, an arid dessert, a room full of orchids and an English garden.

If you are visiting Pittsburgh then you will want to make a trip to Phipps. Phipps is a very nice conservatory that is well planned and maintained. It has a nice variety of plants all year and beautiful outdoor gardens. Phipps does host private events so there are many times during the warmer weather when the outdoor gardens are closed to the public. The Christmas lights that are on display in the outdoor gardens during the month of December are unique and worth seeing. It doesn't take long to go through the entire conservatory. There is free parking but it is limited. The cafe is nice, but it has a limited menu and only offers organic foods and caters to the more health conscience consumers. Be sure to take your camera. Great place to visit for the entire family and well worth the admission price.

We visited the Phipps back in 1998. Back then I found the facility an outstanding conservatory. I remember several signs up then, noting the fundraising and future expansion and modernization. Fifteen year later, not only do I find the renovations completed, but another two , or three expansions added.
One of the large new buildings in the back of the complex called “The Center for Sustainable Landscapes”, (which opened to the public in December, 2012), is worth an hour itself as you explore the building inside and out. They wrote a book about this new building called “Building in Bloom “, check out the editorial reviews at Amazon.com for a wonderful description of this world class LEED certified structure that is on the cutting edge of environmental sustainable construction. You walk in the front door of this circa 1904 brick and glass conservatory and can exit through one of the most modern and green buildings on Earth.
Besides that is a wonderful orchid room, a wonderful temporary exhibit on the plants of India, The new Tropical Forest Conservatory, a wonderful desert room, and some other wonderful features. When we visited in late October 2013, we found the “Fall Festival” going on. The designers here are incredibly talented and the support staff are real workers.
Take aways…If you love plants and gardening, then this is a must see when you are in Pittsburgh.
………There is a nice little coffee shop right off of the main lobby..
..We visited on a Wednesday and found a wonderful farmers market set up out front along the curb, just outside the main entrance. Some of the vendors are there to as late as 6 pm.
…There is limited free parking on the traffic islands out front, otherwise park along the street for about a dollar an hour.
