“Worth a look”

Heinz Memorial Chapel
Ranked #29 of 183 things to do in Pittsburgh

The Heinz Memorial Chapel is worth a look if you are touring the Pittsburgh area, especially if you are at the Carnegie Museum/Library/Music Center complex. The stained glass windows commemorate many people/events in U.S. and Pennsylvania history. Impressive.

The stained glass windows are some of the longest running stained glass anywhere. They are beautiful and original. Also ask for the pipe organ demo. It is awesome. The people working there were very nice. Do not forget to find the church mouse.

This was a lovely place to visit, though we only managed to spend a few minutes inside between weddings.

Entering the Heinz Chapel envelopes you in a inspiring gothic cathedral.

But, if you're lucky, you might catch an impromptu tour. During our visit, there were four of us and maybe six or seven others. The front desk person asked if we'd like to hear about its history. We obliged, we tucked ourselves into a few pews, and learned not only about the chapel, but also about the symbolism of the stained glass areas (each panel has a unique theme and emphasis), and also got to hear the organ being played.

And it was free. Given that it's virtually next door to the "Nationality Rooms" it's well worth adding time to your visit to the Pitt campus.

The exterior of this chapel is very impressive. It is on the campus, which makes parking a challenge at times. The interior is very dark and gothic. The woodwork is beautiful and the stained glass impressive. But no more than other places of worship. I would not recommend this as a special destination, but if you are in the area for other reasons, stop by.
