Inn on the Mexican War Streets
Ranked #4 of 11 Pittsburgh B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed December 10, 2013

I stay at this B&B at least once a year when I travel to Pittsburgh for Steelers games. I found this place about 6 years ago, and I would never stay anywhere else in Pittsburgh. I've stayed at other B&B's close to Heinz Field, but The Inn on the Mexican War Streets is the only place that makes me feel like I am at home. Carl and Jeff, the owners, are so friendly and always willing to talk about the history of the house, and anything else they are up to at that moment. They took great care with the décor, and the breakfast room is really cozy and beautiful, it's like stepping back in time. The neighborhood has great restaurants and the Inn is right across the street from the Aviary (I miss the free tickets that the Inn used to get for their guests). Carl and Jeff can give you great tips for whatever attraction you want to visit or restaurant you want to eat at.
The rooms are reasonably priced for being so close to the Stadium, they serve cookies and other snacks 24/7, and you can bring your own food and drink and keep it in the refrigerator in the kitchen.
I just returned from attending the Steelers-Dolphins game, and I ran into another guest that remembered me and my boyfriend from last year, when we all attended the Steelers-Eagles game. They have a lot of repeat customers for good reason.
I wish I had more reasons to visit Pittsburgh so I could spend more time at the Inn. If you are staying there for the first time, try to book the Mr. Boggs room. The view is incredible.

Great location for walking to the Steeler's game. Decor is interesting in the common areas but a little strange in the guest room. Bed linens were aged and tattered, and lacked the smell of being freshly washed. No mattress pad and the pillows were worn. Breakfast was fine, although it didn't meet the standard of most B&Bs, since it was self-serve and more like a serve-yourself hotel. Wireless is available in the lower floor but pretty-much non-existent upstairs.

Usually I stay at downtown hotels but they were tight this week so decided to try a B&B. Had no idea what to expect. Turned out North Shore is a cool "new" neighborhood that seems to be very interesting, safe, and welcoming, and gives you much more of a window into the real Seattle than staying in an impersonal place in the central business district. This B&B is lovingly looked over by the owners, and you are treated like a genuine house guest from the moment you arrive. And even as you're leaving--when a taxi failed to come, one of them immediately jumped up and said, C'mon, i'll drive you in! Wouldn't it be great if all hotels were like this?

A grand house in the best of 19th Century style lovingly restored for its 21st Century guests. We visited as a couple on a long weekend fling to explore Pittsburgh's various offerings, which included the Pittsburgh Grand Prix. We had a lovely room en-suite, with a healthy continental serve-yourself breakfast where we chatted amiably with some other guests. Our hosts were helpful and discreet and, at their invitation, we were able to enjoy a "special" Grand Dinner in the carriage house which was simply one of the best top-flite meals we've had ... and we do have experience with 5-star establishments.

A lovely place to stay visiting Pittsburgh ... one we've recommended to others and hope to enjoy again.

We stayed here one night because our friend was getting married at the Aviary in the park across the street. It was only a five minute walk to get there. The host gave us a few great dining recommendations as well. Our room, the Red Room was cozy and cute. It was exactly what we expected from a historic home turned B&B--which is to say it's not a luxury hotel, but a nice, relaxing, place in a great location with gorgeous furnishings and a kind, helpful host. Also, the cookies can't be beat!

Room Tip: The Red Room is a good value, but please read the description on the website. It is dark, cozy, and...

We stayed at the Inn for two night while visiting family and attending a Pirate's game. The convenient location made foot travel easy. The beautiful grounds, the park across the street, and the grand front porch added relevance to the history of the Bogg's mansion. We walked the Mexican War Streets admiring the architecture, coffee shop, and pubs. The room, our choice, was adequate but rather "stuffy". The breakfast was basic and repetitive. Our host was friendly We had an enjoyable stay.

This is wonderful place to stay. It is in an old mansion in an interesting neighborhood, across from a lovely park and near some restaurants. Parking is breeze and you can walk to PNC Park and Downtown and presumably to Heinz Field. The owner is very helpful and friendly and, at least when we were there, the other guest were interesting and talkative (and I suspect those are the kind of folks who stay there).
