Inn on the Mexican War Streets

A great alternative to the hotel scene. Very friendly, beautiful inn across from a park where you can go kayaking in a small lake. If you stay for 2 nights, the price goes down significantly. Breakfast is "do it yourself", but with a great selection (including a waffle iron) and variety of settings where you can eat. We chose the back patio one day and huge front porch the next. We will return to the Inn on Mexican War Street.

The Inn on Mexican War Streets is a very interesting little b&b. The Inn keepers are very nice. The hotel itself is a little worn around the edges, showers are a little dingy, fixtures are older, but it is an older hotel so I guess that is to be expected. There are tons of little kitchy elements in each room that provide a chuckle at the very least. We stayed there as part of a wedding that was at the Mattress Factory and since the hotel is walking distance from the Mattress Factory that was great.

The neighborhood seemed to be a little on the sketchy side, but people said that the neighborhood was actually in the process of turning around.

IF you are looking to be close to bars and restaurants I wouldn't pick this hotel, but for a quick weekend stay it was fine.

We were very impressed with the beautiful room, garden and house. Karl was an excellent host. The only let down was the fact that the breakfast on day 2 was identical to day 1 and appeared to be whatever was left over ( down to the knife still being embedded in the loaf of bread). This is a minor complaint and did nothing to diminish our enthusiasm to return. Was easy to walk into Pittsburgh and to get to the PNC Park.

Wonderful location, incredible room.I stayed in Mr Boggs' room with view on the park! beautiful furniture, wood and velvet everywhere, old fashioned style. The owner, Karl is very kind and nice ?. What more to live not to descrbe. Take a car with you since Pittsburgh is very hard to visit on foot.

If I could give the Inn 2 ratings for 2 personalities of mine, it would be a 4 star and a 2 star assessment. First the 4 star, or Beauty rating. The Inn on the Mexican War Streets is a phenomenal place. A historic converted mansion, it has very unique rooms, beautiful garden, spiral staircase, elegant reading room, everything you'd expect of a mansion. Nice owners, only met Jeff, clean, plenty of free street parking. The romantic in me, the guy who doesn't want to stay at another boring city hotel, is completely satisfied.

Rating of 2, the Beast. The photos you see of the Inn are atypical of the neighborhood. Do yourself a favor and do a street view in Google maps before you book. The park across the street is nice during the day, as is North Ave, but after dark the clientele changes. In fact, I didn't see a whole lot of people walking around after dark on any of the 3 nights I was there. I walked to several neighborhood restaurants (there aren't a lot), and found myself alone for most of the journey. A waitress at a restaurant in what was once known as German Town, cautioned me not to take a shortcut through the side streets of the neighborhood, but to stick to the main avenues. A longtime city cab driver gave me similar advice and said continuous neighborhoods to Northside Central were the home to drug gangs. While the gay and lesbian community of Pittsburgh has done a lot to bring back Northside Central, for every beautifully renovated building there is a blighted one around the corner. None of this is the fault of the owners of the Inn mind you. They have done a ton of work, but it is what it is - partially converted.

Another nit pick on my part was the breakfast. I usually associate a B&B with a finely prepared breakfast; something other than a Costco danish and a microwaveable egg sandwich. At the Inn, you get the Costco breakfast - self serve. Nicer dining room than the Holiday Inn, but the same breakfast.

Would I go back? Maybe. I'd likely look at a more dynamic and night time friendly neighborhood in the city of Pittsburgh first.

This lovely Inn is victorian in nature, with a gorgeous winding staircase to the second floor. The rooms are nicely decorated and a good size. We recomment it to all visiting friends and relatives. The proprietors are quite anxious to please. It is located across the Allegheny River, from downtown Pittsburgh, less than one mile from the Pirates balllpark and the Steelers stadium.

My husband and I were in Pittsburgh for the NHL Winter Classic on New Year's Day. We spent three nights here and loved it. We had the Mr. Boggs room which faces the street and over looks the park across the street (in the picture, the 3 windows on the second floor are Mr. Boggs room). The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. The entire Inn was beautifully decorated for Christmas. Karl and Jeff are wonderful hosts. We had made dinner reservations at a local restaurant, but upon arrival at the Inn were told that Jeff prepared a special New Year's eve dinner for the guests. He is a wonderful chef...dinner was delicious. The next morning he prepared a special New Year's Day breakfast of quiche and potatoes, in addition to the cold, every day breakfast items the normally serve. The restaurant is only open for private dinners. I suggest taking bottled water, wine/beer, sodas & snacks with you, as there is nothing "right there" to get those types of things. Free parking on the street and easy walk to downtown and Heinz field. Highly recommend!!
