The University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning is a rare and very unique academic building, even in an urban setting. Frank Lloyd Wright dismissed it (as he did most architecture other than his own) as "the world's largest keep off the grass sign," but it does have the effect of inspiring at least a little reverence.

The International Rooms are located on one floor and are usually accessible all through the day during the academic year. They are used for classes and are mostly smaller seminar rooms. They are designed by architects and designers from the subject nation and also have explanatory signage.

Most universities have places like this that are special in their architectural richness, but I'm not aware of another that weaves the architecture itself so closely into the learning itself.

A must-see stop, along with the nearby Carnegie Institute, on any tour of Oakland!

As a graduate of the Univ. of Pgh, I visited them and had classes in them. Gives us a very brief feeling of other nations.

If you are visiting the 'burgh, you need to check out this area, the Strip district on a Saturday and the gateway clipper.

The nationality rooms are actually rooms within the Cathedral of Learning. This is an active campus building of the University of Pittsburgh. You get to walk around and it's amazing. It's free. There is a gift shop. You will like it very much if you like history and architecture. You will fill like you are in Germany.

They do have tours sometime.

It is a quiet place of study, so make sure small children know to behave.

There was a coffee shop in the basement
