“GREAT PLACES TO VISIT”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2012

Walking around and seeing all the Nationality Rooms was just one of the neatest things about our tour of Oakland and the University of Learning. I hope they keep adding more rooms so that when we go again there will be new ones to view.

“Visit these during the Christmas Season. The decorations are amazing”

These are a Pittsburgh Treasure, particularly at Christmas when each nationality decorates their room with decorations from their native countries.

“Hidden Treasure at University of Pittsburgh”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 27, 2012

Maybe everyone else knew about the Nationality Rooms in the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh, but we did not. We just happened to accidentally come across one when touring the campus on our own. Luckily for us, there was a guided tour about to begin so we signed right up. These rooms are truly amazing. The rooms were designed to represent the many different ethnic groups that have settled in the Pittsburgh area. Beautifully done, and authentic. The tour only cost $3.00 per adult and are conducted by knowledgeable students. I really have never seen anything like it all in one place. Like a beautiful museum of the world. The rooms are used as classrooms, so make sure that you visit when tours are available. A real gem for the University!

“Trip around the World!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 26, 2012

I guess especially in the "olden days" when traveling wasn't so easy you didn't have to go to Germany, England, Hungary, etc. Just by visiting the Nationality Rooms at the Cathedral of Learning you could experience the finest craftsmanship that particular country had to offer. There are frescoes, mosaics, wood carvings. stained glass windows, and much more in each of the 27 class rooms.
My family and I paid the $3 admission (per person) to visit the rooms on the first floor and we were equipped with an audio tape plus recorder and a key to to open and close the rooms. However, our enjoyment was a little marred by all those groups of people who hadn't paid any admission and just wanted to have "a quick look at the room". Of course we couldn't exactly lock them in, but we wished there was a better way to accommodate everybody. It was much easier on the third floor where the newer "Nationality Rooms" were located. They were left open during the operating hours for everybody.

“Unique Heritage”

There is nothing like this anywhere in the US! Christmas is especially nice. Each room is decorated as the holiday is celebrated in that country.
