“Good basic hotel near Pitt”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

Only a block or two away from University of Pittsburgh, a nice clean, quiet, hotel. Friendly, helpful staff. Small, basic gym. Had four double rooms with friends. They put us all together which was helpful & appreciated. CVS & gas station on each side. Lots of restaurants, shops & pubs to walk to as well as several Universities. Good location for college area. Complimentary shuttle hourly to town square ( downtown, near the Fairmont Hotel) which is just a few blocks from PNC park. Beds are high quality foam mattresses which I found to get sweaty at night. They are supposed to have a knob to "adjust" firmness, I never found that they made any difference. They were comfortable except for the moisture issue.

Room Tip: As a general rule, I never want to be close to the elevators.

Excellent location. Dining and amenities w/in walking distance. Wonderful to be next to University of Pittsburgh campus, yet very close to downtown venues. Stayed there for a concert downtown. Everyone loved the location and teens want to go back. No pool though, but it didn't affect us. Too much else to do. Would probably be much busier during the school year. Restaurant on site, if you don't want to go out. Rooms very nice.

We were looking for a place to stay while we visited colleges in Oakland. This was the perfect place. It is a typical downtown hotel room which means it is small but it makes up for it in many ways. The room was clean and comfortable and we enjoyed having the refrigerator.

We also used the shuttle several times while we were there. The drivers were always very nice and courteous and we did not ever have to wait for a long time to be picked up for our return trip back to the hotel. I would like to commend all of the staff who were very friendly - from the gentlemen who parked our cars, to the maintenance man that we talked to in the elevator.

The area was very safe and we enjoyed being able to walk to my son's interview at Pitt and to several restaurants and stores.

Overall, this is a great place to stay in Pittsburgh and I will definitely return again.

Stayed here as our son was touring the PITT campus. I was hesitant, as several recent reviews painted the hotel in a less than wonderful light, and I've stayed in enough Hilton properties to have certain expectations. This hotel met or exceeded all of them.

First off, mention that you are there for the university. They gave us a discount when they heard our reason for visiting was to tour the university. Nice. They certainly didn't have to do that (in fact, they are NOT one of the hotels that PITT mentions as providing a discount), so it was a nice start. The check in was smooth, including the use of the valet parking. Yes, you do have to make use of the valet parking; but as Pittsburgh is a city with limited public lots or street parking, take advantage of it. Yes, you have to pay for it, but it is not priced any differently than many other large metropolitan areas, and in fact, is cheaper than some (NYC/Philly), so I don't know why people would complain about the prices for valet parking. It's not unreasonable.

The room (ours was on the 6th floor) was clean and well taken care of. Duvets were new and fresh looking, and the room was clean - even in the corners (which I always look for. I figure if housekeeping is skimping on vacuuming the corners of the rooms - especially by the bed(s), they'll skimp on other stuff, too).
Other reviews have mentioned hearing hallway or other room activity. Other than the usual air conditioning unit sounds, we noticed nothing of that sort. Not even tv sets in the next room.
Toiletries were replaced daily (we stayed two nights), as were the items in the coffee bar area. Towels were plentiful.
The only downside I would mention are the Sleep Number beds (Dial a number, Sleep Number, I don't remember the official name); I personally did not find them super comfortable, but that is a personal preference.
The ladies at the front desk were pleasant and super helpful. Ottania(?) was great in helping us pick dining options, and helping us to navigate around the town. She was patient, efficient, and everything you want your concierge/check-in staff to be.
About the courtesy shuttle: it is a courtesy, provided you stay within a 3 mile radius from the hotel. While that may not sound like a big distance, we found that it more than covered the distances we needed. Now, bear in mind that these gentlemen are not just waiting around for you - they are busy taking care of other hotel guests, and may be enroute somewhere when you need them. therefore, it may take 15 minutes or so until they arrive to pick you up. If you relax - maybe hang out at the hotel bar or in the lobby, they'll be there shortly. Of course, planning ahead of time and making arrangements BEFORE the last minute probably helps a great deal. Theodore is a walking encyclopedia of Pittsburgh knowledge, and will tell you P'burgh information as you travel to your destination. Another driver, CJ, was more than happy to help provide us with the names of several restaurants for our last night in town. In fact - everyone at the hotel was happy to provide us with info on what they considered "the best" of Pittsburgh. Now really, as a guest, how can you find fault with that?
*If you are attending an event at PITT: it is within easy walking distance (just a few blocks). You won't need the shuttle, unless the weather is inclement, or you have someone who is unable to walk around easily) However, if you are attending something at CMU - I'd take it.)-*
I highly, highly recommend staying here, if you are visiting PITT, CMU or have other business in the area. These guys do the Hilton name proud.

Room Tip: Fresh hot coffee available all morning in the lobby area, and lemon/strawberry water in the afternoo...

Excellent location! We visited this hotel in July 2013 for the primary purpose to stay close to Carnegie Mellon University as we were visiting CMU for our son. We couldn't be happier with our choice of hotel. This is top quality hotel with excellent service all around. We had a minor issue with the door key not working and the manager was so nice that they gave us complimentary fully breakfast coupons. Hot breakfast was excellent. We were very happy with our stay at this hotel.

There is a complimentary shuttle from the hote to university area and any place within 3 mile radious and that we found to be very valuable. They dropped us at CMU in the morning at 10 and picked us up around 2.

We skipped the valet parking ($18) and parked across the street in a garage for $5/day. This was very convienient. There are ample of restaurants including Chipotle, Noodle Company, Qdoba etc.
Please note that the hotel doesn't have an indoor pool.

Room Tip: If you can chose, try to get a room on a higher floor (we were on 8th floor) with University view. C...

Came here to look at CMU, stayed twice in a few months, The rooms and bathrooms are nicely furnished. The hotel feels very new, still has new car smell in the rooms. Free shuttle to campuses are very convenient and the drivers are very friendly. All the staff I encountered at the front desk were very helpful and went above and beyond in welcoming me to Pitt. Would recommend the hotel, it's a bit pricey but options around campus are somewhat limited. Pantry in the lobby and microwave in the rooms make it very handy for late night snackers.

I was very pleased with our stay at this hotel. Our room was clean (I felt comfortable walking around without shoes or socks, which was nice) and the bed options were quite unique. I have never seen a bed with adjustable softness before - very comfortable. I was happy that the hotel was within walking distance to various locations around the immediate area of the city and close to dining options. The staff whom I encountered were very friendly. Thank you for a nice stay.
