“Thoroughly enjoyed our stay”
Reviewed June 20, 2010

The service we received from everyone at the hotel was very friendly and helpful. The room was large, clean and comfortable. The proximity to spa, shopping and restaurants was just what we were looking for. We really enjoyed our stay at such a unique and charming hotel. If you appreciate the opportunity to stay in one of the large old mansions in Shadyside, you will enjoy your nights at Sunnyledge.

Seems as if no money has been put in for some time. Threadbare. Linnens and bedding substandard, no conditioner in bathroom (shampoo only), no coffee maker in room, no screens on windows, carpets old, and quite a few ants in the room.

Sunnyledge has some charm but it suffers from a major lack of an on site manager.
There were some problems during our multi-night stay recently, but the only person we saw there was a young girl at the desk (and a different one each day). Each time, we were told that she would pass the problem along to "the manager".

The hotel seems to be past its prime and what may have been charming years ago is now just neglected. For example:
1. Weeds growing on the steps as you enter the hotel.
2. Plumbing that looks rusted and is "noisy".
3. Poor lighting in the rooms.
4. Towels with holes and frayed ends.

Also, don't book unless you are sure you will stay there. Their cancellation policy is not very forgiving.

We stayed in Sunnlyledge for 3 nights late November- early December 2008 and found the service mediocre & the whole expereince wildly over-priced. We did stay in the suite which of course does and should cost more than the other rooms. However, there are also other hidden charges which perhaps not so justly push your total up by quite a lot. For example, I was very tacken aback to be asked to pay an "'energy' charge" in addition to the room charge, for the use of electricity. This to us, seems stingy and tacky considering the high cost of the room. Also, compared to any other hotel I have stayed in where breakfast is included, the "breakfast" at Sunnlyedge is pathetic, at least from what we saw. It consists of toast (toasted bread, bagel or perhaps a croissant) and coffee....and ours arrived cold. You can also request some fruit and yogurt but hardly any selection. When the room was serviced (once a day), only one of the two beds was made and plates and remains of packets and food were left & there was no toilet paper etc....
There were more disappointments...but this review has to end somewhere!

The location was perfect for our needs. The house is pretty. The college kids who staff the place are friendly, though clearly service is not their priority (and why should it be?) Not once did we see or speak with a manager or someone who seemed to have any stake in the place.

My wife and I stayed at the Sunnylege the first weekend in September, and was very disappointed with the hotel in general and the staff in particular. The staff were college students who just wanted to put in the time and get out. As a result they were unfriendly, uncaring, unhelpful to guests. The rooms were not cleaned daily, leaving hair in the sinks, and debris all around.
The wallpaper and furniture were stained and unclean. A letter to the owner was never answered disclosing the owner, as well as the staff, could care less what the guests thought.

This is a very small hotel with only eight rooms. One cannot expect availability of personnel as in a large luxury hotel. The inn is nice with beautiful public space and very nice rooms. It is expensive but ok if you have to be in the area. The restaurant was not well attended when we were there. Prices are quite high. Breakfast is included but it is very thin with only coffee, tea and a choice between English muffin or bagel. There are just over half a dozen parking spots on the premise. Street parking may be difficult. There are very few nice places to stay in the immediate area. This is a good choice. Within a few blocks is the Shadyside commercial district with many good restaurant choices.

We paid $139.00 for a little slice of heaven at Sunnyledge. Sure, there are some tiles that need repair, and the robes are starting to be a little less fuzzy, but this place is so beautiful, and out of the ordinary, and inexpensive!!!, that it's totally worth it.

We have had friendly, polite service from nice young kids working there. Those people who are expecting white-glove service for $139 are deluding themselves. We stayed there on our anniversary and had a great night.

My one complaint is that the windows don't open.

  • Liked — Proximity to Shadyside bars/restaurants, PRICE, and gorgeous old-world decor
  • Disliked — The windows only opened slightly.
