We finally got to the Black Lab and had a nice meal. However, as my title suggests, we were expecting to be blown away after what friends had told us. The food was good except for my partner's steak, which they couldn't get right even with two tries - it takes more skill than most believe to cook a steak well done and still keep it moist and tender. My shrimp & grits was good, though it needed something green on the side. Waited too long for the server to get to the table to open the wine, so we had to do it ourselves. Also: they don't take reservations, and they don't seat incomplete parties. And yet it had open tables on a balmy Saturday night, so maybe they should rethink that, since we nearly went elsewhere when they couldn't give us a table to let us wait for a friend who needed to get there after his church service.
This is a serviceable BYO. It would seem to have dependable interesting food in filling quantities.
