“Great location ... on the expensive side”
Reviewed September 22, 2009

Stayed at this motel while biking the Great Allegheny Passage. Our room was clean. The location is great, right in the center of town. My only complaint is that the price was a bit high based on the age of the property.

We were visiting Falling Water and driving from NY, so didn't want to add to the drive by staying at one of the larger old world hotels in this area. We chose Yough Plaza because it's five minutes from Falling Water. The town of Ohiopyle is kind of cute — on the river with a lot of kayaking rental places and little stores (most of which close at the end of October and reopen in spring). Yough Plaza is on a side street and is nothing to speak of. The staff was friendly enough, the room was clean, but it's pretty bare bones. No hair dryer, drinking glasses or bath amenities and at $95/night in this rural location, I would have expected a little more. The beds were also pretty uncomfortable and the pillows were hard and lumpy. There's a little cafe across the street, but aside from the spectacular Falling Water (worth the visit, no matter where you stay!), if you're in this area, be sure to dine at Chez Gerard about 20 minutes away. It's fabulous. Charming, welcoming and an incredible bargain with a prix fixe dinner for $50. Worth twice the price — which can make up for spending $95 at Yough Plaza!

  • Liked — proximity to Falling Water
  • Disliked — lack of amenities, uncomfortable pillows

Extended family of 15 took a raft ride on the Middle Yough and needed a place to stay. Nothing great, but nothing that bad. Walking distance to the store/guide where you take the bus ride to your drop in point on the raft ride. Restaurant right across the street, while slow at times, provides decent food. Remember, you are there to raft ride, you want a place to slepp, get a shower, and stuff some food down. This is an adequate place to call home for one night.

  • Liked — Location. Walking distance to raft ride company.
  • Disliked — Mattresses and sheeets on bed. Both need updated.

What a Rip-off. Completely overpriced. This is a third-rate motel with third rate service and a third rate attitude of employees. I would stay somewhere else next time.

  • Liked — Proximity to town
  • Disliked — Signs all over the place saying you would be charged for this, that, and everything

The Yough Plaza Motel is located in the sleepy small town of Ohiopyle. It is the most convenient place to stay near to the famous Frank Lloyd Wright houses "Fallingwater" and "Kentuck Knob" as the other hotels/ motels are much further away and the Yough Plaza is only a 10 minute drive away. We stayed there at the end of April, during the tourist off-season, so it was fairly desolate. The Yough Plaza Motel is fairly simple, plain, and clean. The room had two double beds which each had a thin mattress, clean sheets, okay pillows and rather thin blankets. It also had a table and armchair. The floor is carpeted and had been vaccummed. The bathroom is very clean. It also had a small color TV with bad reception. The room does not have a phone, so no wake up calls. They do not have much of a front desk for reception, we were told that they would put the key in the outside mailbox and for us to let ourselves in.

I was struck by the number of signs and rules posted on the walls. They reserve the right to ask you to leave without cause or a refund. They take inventory of their towels (4 of each) and their is a sign saying the towels are not to be used to wipe cars or bikes down. They will charge you for anything that is missing or damaged. There is absolutely no smoking or pets allowed. My guess is that the management is used to catering to youths on white water rafting trips, as the Yough River is a white water rafting destination.

The Yough Plaza Motel is fine for an overnight pit stop if you can tolerate the freight trains that rumble through the town every hour until 11 p.m. There is a general store nearby which charges grossly inflated prices on food, and a cafe restaurant across the street. Otherwise, I would look for places outside of the town for food and entertainment. We were charged a reasonable rate for our overnight and they had a very reasonable cancellation policy.

I'd stay here again if I was visiting Fallingwater or Kentuck Knob, as long as you don't mind being treated like a 10 year old kid.

  • Liked — The super convenient location allowed us to arrive on time for our 10 am Fallingwater tour.
  • Disliked — The many rules and restrictions posted on the walls made me feel like a prisoner.

If you're visiting Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, I highly recommend the Yough Plaza Motel in Ohiopyle (about a 5-minute drive).

We arrived in the evening and weren't sure what we were going to get but it was a very pleasant place! We stayed in an efficiency suite with 2 bedrooms, living room with TV and pull-out sofa, bathroom, and eat-in kitchen ($217 for 5 adults). There are also regular rooms. Very clean, nicer than a motel, much like your typical vacation rental. GREAT deck outside the door where we ate dinner and breakfast. All the rooms seem to have outdoor areas where you can relax with deck chairs, swings, tables, etc.

The little town of Ohiopyle is just on the river, where you can paddle or just sit on the banks. The old railway station is now a visitor's center, and there is a pedestrian bridge across to an island where there are many trails. I gather that many people do whitewater rafting on the river(s) nearby, and the motel owners run whitewater tours

All in all it was a quiet, clean, rustic and beautiful little town and place to stay! Everyone in our group really wished we could have stayed there longer!
