Owner description: Located at the southern reaches of the Laurel Ridge, Ohiopyle State Park encompasses approximately 20,500 acres of rugged natural beauty and serves as the gateway to the Laurel Highlands. Close to major metropolitan areas and offering vast choices of activities. Passing through the heart of the park, the rushing waters of the Youghiogheny River Gorge are the centerpiece for Ohiopyle. The "Yough" provides some of the best whitewater boating in the eastern United States, as well as spectacular scenery. Other activites are biking the Great Allegheny Passage, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, picnicking, horsebacking riding, rock climbing, and hiking.

I've been to the park twice for whitewater rafting and I absolutely love it. Being on the river is like being transformed into a world with no worries. Beautiful scenery, very clean water and a lovely area. I recommend this park for anyone who loves nature, clean surroundings and relaxation.

It was a nice winter day so my husband and I decided to drive over and check this place out. We will definitely go back this summer! The scenery is beautiful and there is a ton of things to do. We walked one of the hiking trails for about a 1/2 mile but it was getting late so had to turn around. We walked down to Cucumber Falls and took pictures and although the trail was a little slippery due to the snow (melt) it was easy to navigate with the hand rail all the way down. We've already decided to go back this summer and white water raft and do some hiking!

Visit the bike trail at least 4-5 times a year. Have also white-water rafted and kayaked the river. Safe and easy trail to bike ...with beautiful scenery. Nice little restaurants, bars and ice cream parlors when you are finished.

From D.C., Ohiopyle State Park is about a 4 hours or so drive. We had reserved a campsite ahead of time online for the Columbus Day weekend 2011.

Pro's
- the campsites were so nice and we had more privacy from the trees than at other places like Shenandoah National Park and Assateague Island National Seashore. There were also nice showers with hot water and we were able to buy firewood nearby to make campfires each night
- we went whitewater rafting on our own with (with an outfitter in town) our two boys on the Middle Yough (without a guide) and it was great. It was a long day, though, as the non-whitewater stretches were long with not much of a breeze to help us along - so a lot of paddling!
- Fort Neceessity NHS is nearby - our boys earned their Junior Ranger badge front the national park site. There is also a nice museum inside and an interpretive playground, which was cool and the boys liked seeing the surprisingly small fort where George Washington was surrounded by the French
- great bike trails and places to rent bikes if you don't bring them along (next time we will do this, too, but we ran out of time)

Cons
- There are some natural stone water runs that the native people's used to use a long time ago. While we walked to one, there were two boys that decided to slide down one while we were nearby, and one of the boys got hurt. We were very close to going down with our children, and we were so glad that we didn't.... One of the boys was close to getting hypothermia and we helped the family get a ranger to help. Be careful!
- Shop ahead of time for your camping food. There are places to buy food, but there are not as many healthy food choices.

Overall - this trip was a highlight and the fall colors west of Cumberland, MD were gorgeous. We enjoyed the outdoor recreation opportunities as well as the Town of Ohiopyle with the playground and just hanging out at our campground site.

We went camping at Ohiopyle State Park and had a wonderful time at this park located in the beautiful Laurel Highlands. The park and the immediate area offers activates galore for everyone including camping, hiking, biking, whitewater rafting, fishing, natural waterslides, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water and Kentuck Knob, Fort Necessity National Battlefield and more. The campground itself was a quality state campground with mostly large sites and many trees; our site was very large with electric. The campground also offers shower and bath houses, water, playgrounds, yurts, pet friendly sites and a dump station. If you reserve online, you can view images of the actual sites to help in selection a good site. Ohiopyle is in a surprisingly remote location with a minimum number of stores in the area so be sure to bring what you need. We had a great time and look forward to a return trip in the future.
