“Worst dinner ever”
Reviewed February 23, 2012

Went for Valentine's dinner and had the worst experience in a restaurant ever. My wife ordered two different glasses of white wine. Mine came first but was served to my wife. Hers came 10 minutes later. The waitress kept calling the special soup clam bisque instead of crab. Restaurant was out of 3 menu items at 6:30PM. Were told the V day special menu was $50 per person. But if you added the items based on the regular menu price the total would be less than $50 so we ordered off the menu. Scallop and risotto dish was AWFUL. Smelled terrible. Scallops were rubbery. I think the food was spoiled so I sent it back. This is the first time I ever sent a meal back because it was unpalatable. Very disappointed in the restaurant because we enjoyed the front bar one Friday night and thought we found a new favorite. Never going back for food.

“Excellent - Valentine's Weekend”
Reviewed February 16, 2012

My wife and I ate at the Black Horse Tavern for the first time on Saturday evening. It was fantastic! The owner stopped by our table between courses and provided a history of the building and area around the town, which was very interesting. The atmosphere (upstairs dining room) and meal was excellent. The items served were perfect proportions and very tasty. We will definately be back if we have the opportunity!

“Should serve tavern food”
Reviewed January 24, 2012

Went for an early dinner for two on a recent Friday night. Was seated in the front bar area. Dark wood and decor as with most historic taverns. Was waited on by the bartender/hostess and another gal. Both pleasant. Strange and limited menu. This place isn't sure if it is a tapas bar or tavern. Should probably choose tavern, and switch to burgers and hot specialty sandwiches within a reasonable price range. Crab bisque was tasty, if a little thick, and with very little crab in it. Artichoke with humus on pita appetizer was bland. For dinner, scallops platter was just good as was the chicken dish (only one chicken on the menu). Again, this restaurant would be more successful as a traditional tavern offering comfort food/drink at $$ prices.

“Not Bad”
Reviewed January 6, 2012

First visit in an interesting historic building. Clearly a popular local place with many people coming and going throughout the evening. Service is very good with servers coming to the table several times asking if we were ready to order (wanted to chat for a bit beforehand) and after food was delivered. Interesting menu offeringsw with appetizers and entrees, but also a 10 or 12 item tapas menu. Food was good and prices reasonable. If I had a criticism, it would be that the noise levels were somewhat high.

“Hard to define”
Reviewed October 23, 2011

I've been here a few times. This place is very hard to define: it looks like a bar (actually two bars, they have two bar rooms on the first floor), but it's also a restaurant (2nd floor has a totally different, "classier" look) and then they sometimes bring in a DJ or have other "special activities". Generally, I really like this place. I usually just come to drink and maybe get a snack to go along with the drink and it's always good atmosphere, nice staff and you feel that you're very welcome. I also like the way this place is designed: bare brick walls, dim lights. It's very interesting and definitely not your typical place.
Food is good and many people actually come here for dinner. I think the food is ok but I wouldn't get too excited about it. It's a good place to eat though, if you're looking for a "bar scene" restaurant or a romantic place (2nd floor).
