“A very good experience”
Reviewed August 15, 2014 via mobile

Just what you hope for on a college tour. Quiet, clean with a fresh look and feeling, convenient, and friendly. I almost always find Holiday Inn Express a solid, reasonably priced option on longer road trips. This hotel was no exception. While the location near a shopping mall doesn't make it a place for a romantic getaway, it is close to Carnegie Mellon, easily reachable, and very practical overall.

We just returned from a long weekend in Pittsburgh. We normally stay in Oakland, but knew we'd be meeting friends for dinner at the Waterfront so decided to stay closer. The location of this hotel is great - so close to the shopping, restaurants, and movie theater - but also convenient for Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, and Oakland.

We checked in smoothly and were greeted warmly. The room (King Bed.), while small, was clean and attractive. We went out for the evening and when we returned were greeted by a nice attendant at the front desk.

The first example of poor customer service began very early the next morning. At 1:30AM, our smoke detector began to beep loudly (as if its battery was low). After looking ourselves for a way to get it to stop we called the front desk. The front desk attendant did not seem to have any answer for how to get this to stop. We finally took the entire detector off the wall (at her request) and she took it back down to the lobby. We wondered if it was a great idea to have a hotel room with no smoke detector but frankly, at 2AM after travelling all day...we were too tired to care. While she was polite...there was no apology for the inconvenience of being woken up by a problem with the hotel's smoke detectors at 1:30AM and having to stay up until 2AM because the hotel staff was slow with what to do to help us.

The following day there was no follow-up and when we returned to the room after being out all day the smoke detector had not been repaired/replaced, etc. We still had the blank spot on the wall. We went to bed. At 5AM, the building's fire alarm went off. We evacuated the building with the rest of the guests and stood outside for an hour while waiting for the volunteer fire department to show up (it took about 20-30 minutes, apparently they weren't all that worried about the alarm), mill around aimlessly for another 20-30 minutes, and then one of the firefighters informed us we could reenter the building.

During this entire time (babies and small children scared and crying, adults in pajamas and no shoes, grumpy, tired hotel guests, etc.), I did not see one Holiday Inn Express employee. As we re-entered the building no hotel employee was visible...no one to thank guests for being calm and orderly, or apologize for the inconvenience. No one.

Now - don't get me wrong. False alarms happen. People need to evacuate regardless. But when you are in a service industry...I would hope that when this false alarm greatly inconveniences EVERY SINGLE GUEST in your hotel...(SOME FOR THE SECOND NIGHT IN A ROW)..you would be a bit more proactive in acknowledging that inconvenience.

My husband and I left this morning expecting that someone at the front desk would apologize for the alarm so early that morning, or at least acknowledge the inconvenience. We were not even greeted as we left the building. The front desk employees chatted with each other.

This is a fine hotel in a great location...but as a Holiday Inn Express IHG member, we stay with this chain a lot, and I was disappointed with the way the staff at this hotel handled the fact that my husband and I had both evenings of sleep in their hotel disrupted by fire alarms with absolutely no acknowledgment or apology.

We were in Pittsburgh for an event at the University of Pittsburgh and noticed that the Hotel we usually stayed at near the Pitt campus had changed hands. This hotel looked to be a short drive away and 1/3 the cost. We decided to use this hotel and extend our stay a night. We usually would hit this shopping center (which we call the stacks becouse of the hold smoke stacks still up) when we're in the area. We loved being in the middle of this shopping center. We could walk to restaurants and stores. The ride to Oakland was less than 15 minutes even on a Monday morning. Room was clean and like new. The breakfast was similar to every other HIE, but with a few healthier options. We will stay here again and recommend to others.

Checked in using my points for a free stay and then decided to get the room next door as well. Our first room had wallpaper hanging from the wall in several spots. Room 325. Our second room, #327 had stains all over the carpet that didn't look like they had been cleaned. There were hairs on the bed as well. This was my second time at the hotel and my second time being disappointed with this hotel. I probably won't return.

Room Tip: Room sizes are small. I was told that they have 0 suites at this hotel.

My husband and I just finished the C&O Canal/Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) Bike Trail and we were wet, tired, and early. Brent, the Manager, let us get into the room ASAP so we could get out of the rain and get cleaned-up. He let us store the bikes in an unused meeting room. We really appreciated the good service, clean accommodations, and the good breakfast in the morning.

We were visiting the University of Pitt and needed a place to lay our heads for the night. We arrived a little before 9 pm and were greeted by a very lovely, friendly, young lady. Great demeanor, very upbeat. Room was extremely clean and stocked with the proper necessities. Nice walk to the restaurants and shopping. Overall a great experience, will definitely stay again.
