“Worst restaurant experience ever”
Reviewed October 7, 2010

Attempting to make a reservation here should have been my first warning. After calling and first repeatedly getting a fax machine ringing in my ear, I was then put on hold and hung up on twice when someone finally answered!

My group and I arrived before our reservation and we were seated early. After 5-10 minutes of waiting, a cocktail waitress arrived to take our drink orders. Our drinks arrived and they were halfway gone before our waitress appeared. She had the nerve to ask us if we were ready to order or if we wanted to enjoy our drinks when we'd already been waiting for about 20 minutes. We ordered and some time later received our dinner salad, which was nothing more than a handful of bagged lettuce. No onions, tomatoes, croutons, etc. I repeat--just lettuce.

Then the wait for our meal began. After waiting for more than an hour and watching a party that had arrived after us being served their food, we flagged down our waitress to ask where our meals were. She left the table and returned, telling us that "unfortunately, this is considered leisurely dining, and the chicken you ordered takes half an hour to cook because it's this thick" --at this point, she gestured about 6 inches with her hands. We asked to speak to the manager, and the owner arrived at our table, telling us there had been a mistake with one of our dinners and he was upset with his kitchen staff. He offered us a free round of drinks and we accepted.

20 minutes later, our food finally came out. One entree--a seafood dish--was cold, one of our chicken entrees was raw in the center. Those of us who received meals that were warm were disgusted by our $30 meals that didn't even feature fresh ingredients or a good flavor. (My chicken coopersmith was made with canned diced tomatoes. For $30. Horrible value!)

We ended up leaving without eating our dinners, after waiting for over 2 hours. The owner gave us our drinks and uneaten meals for free and told us he had fired the chef.

This was truly my worst experience ever. The service was pathetic, customer service practically nil, the food was overpriced and inedible (even dangerous, given the raw chicken). The building is beautiful, but I will never return while it is under its current management.

“The most interesting eating/drinking setting ever”
Reviewed June 18, 2010

Wish it were easy to photograph or video the catacombs which are the cave-like downstairs of this place, since it's out of control gorgeous, old and interesting (owner, take note, and hire a professional videographer/photographer, so you can have more striking images of all the various rooms on your website).

Sure, the wine list is a bit dated here, but we'll be back with others since this place is too unique and historic not to share.

The correct mix of staff, food preparation, and PR could make this place the most sought-after restaurant/attraction on this side of PA. It's a gem.

“Would you like flies with that?”
Reviewed June 1, 2010

We ate at the Biergarten which is, no doubt, a great setting. The atmosphere outside is great. Unfortunately, the flies were out of control. Sure, it's outside but there are simple steps a restaurant can take to reduce outside pests. They clearly haven't done a thing. Unless you count the funny old man killing them with a fly swatter.

The food was disappointing. I had the steak salad which read much better on paper than it did on a plate. The steak tips were tough and dry. The "bed of greens" was mostly tasteless, iceberg lettuce. The black olives were of the sliced, canned variety. A poor excuse for a steak salad. The burger was likely a formed, frozen patty and tasteless. The blue cheese that we paid extra for with our wings was watered down. Onion wings were decent. We had a several plates of chicken wing bones sitting on our table for an unacceptable amount of time.

We went up to the store to check out their beer kits. No one was there. We weren't even sure it was a store. It was dusty, nothing was setup to look at.

A lot of "misses" here. Seems like they have too much going on and not enough focus and no strong management. Like they want to offer something for everyone but don't do a great job at any of it.

“a horrible experience”
Reviewed May 16, 2010

We booked the Catacombs in advance of a leisure trip to the Lancaster area. We arrived earlier than our reservation and got onto a tour. It was given by a first time young lady who didn't really know what she was saying, but it was only the beginning. We were taken down to the Catacombs and waitied to be seated, that also seemed to be a problem for the staff. They couldn't figure out how to seat 3 different couples among the many open tables. Ok the atmosphere was interesting and one of the other rooms was filled with happy sounding people. We seemed hopeful. We sat eating the "free soggy pretzles and dip" while deciding on what to eat. The same guide/waitress recited the specials, but couldn't pronounce the items or give descriptions. We ordered from the main menu. 30 min later our salad came as well as 3 rolls. Another 1/2 hr. later our soup came. Both of our soups were cold and had to be sent back. The wait staff seems to be used to this because they didn't show any surprise about it. When the soup came back it wasn't much warmer. About an hr later our main meal came. The food was also cold and some uncooked. While we were eating one of the other couples that arrived when we did got up and left because after 2 hours they never got any food. Waitress never came to check on us while we were eating to see if we needed anything. When she finally came back we told her about the cold meals and again the waitress didn't seem too shocked. She offered us free dessert, but all we wanted was to get out. What a waste of money and time.
