Description: Situated on the Sawkill Creek, in Milford, PA the Waterwheel Café, Bakery & Bar was started in April of 1989 in a restored 19th century water-powered mill, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally built in the early 1800's this lively example of American history is now in action and its doors are open to the public. Water rushes over the three-story high water-wheel, driving a series of shafts, gears, pulleys and belts that once powered the stones & grain-milling equipment, all visible through the glass walls of the Café & Bar. Starting at first as a bakery & lunch café the Waterwheel has grown into a full scale restaurant, bakery and bar-serving breakfast & lunch daily with dinners being served Thursday, Friday & Saturday evenings. Waterwheel's customers are comfortable in a relaxed, casual atmosphere. The kitchen staff consistently prepares a fresh and flavorful eclectic menu that excites not only the palate, but the eye as well.

Meh. We were looking for a decent place for dinner with friends for a night in the Poconos. We went to this cute little place in Milford. The food was average; the fish was overcooked and flavorless. Portions were skimpy. I should have been tipped off by the American/Vietnamese menu; plus it's like a dessert shop. These are things that done really all go together.

The service was lacking too. A girl brought out this expansive dessert board. But she was annoyed when we asked her about each of the desserts as we were trying to decide. "Oh, what is the 'Coconut Chocolate Bar?" "It's, uh, a coconut bar with chocolate." Oh--I see. I should have known....

The three of us (me, wife, father-in-law) were headed to a different place for dinner when my wife stopped in a Milford boutique. When she came out, she said the proprietor had recommended Waterwheel, so we went there instead. It was a great suggestion.

The restaurant is just off a main road, next to a picturesque creek. We ate on the ground level, though there seemed to be another part of the restaurant on the second floor. Where we ate was set up like a pastry shop, with homemade cakes and cookies behind glass counters, giving the place a cafe-like feel.

But the food was far from cafe fare. The place has an interesting mix of traditional American food (lamb chops, sea bass, steak) and specialty Vietnamese dishes, including noodles with seafood.

Our waitress recommended the sea bass and the lamb chops, and we ended up getting one of the former and two of the latter. Everything was absolutely delicious. The lamb chops were huge--full of succulent meat and not much fat. The whipped potatoes and asparagus rounded the dish perfectly. The bass was tender and plentiful, as well.

The only drawback is that the wait staff could be more attentive. While they did an OK job refilling our water, we had to ask for more bread, and they never volunteered to refill our soda glasses, even though they walked by and eyeballed them quite a few times.

Vietnamese fare and also some continental cuisine. Limited menu but quality abounds. Great breakfast, all baking done on premises. Cool little bar downstairs with bar menu.
