Description: Situated on the Sawkill Creek, in Milford, PA the Waterwheel Café, Bakery & Bar was started in April of 1989 in a restored 19th century water-powered mill, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally built in the early 1800's this lively example of American history is now in action and its doors are open to the public. Water rushes over the three-story high water-wheel, driving a series of shafts, gears, pulleys and belts that once powered the stones & grain-milling equipment, all visible through the glass walls of the Café & Bar. Starting at first as a bakery & lunch café the Waterwheel has grown into a full scale restaurant, bakery and bar-serving breakfast & lunch daily with dinners being served Thursday, Friday & Saturday evenings. Waterwheel's customers are comfortable in a relaxed, casual atmosphere. The kitchen staff consistently prepares a fresh and flavorful eclectic menu that excites not only the palate, but the eye as well.

I've had good food at the Waterwheel, and bad. I've had delectable breakfast, and mediocre lunches and dinners. The atmosphere is unique -- an old mill -- but it's often a bit musty and drafty and never 'quite spotless.' What I've never had at the Waterwheel, in 10+ years of going there, is good service.

This is a small, unique, quaint place to dine. If it is crowded, it's noisy. If it's empty, it can be cold and drafty. But, whether it is busy or slow, the service is simply abysmal. Think of a bad diner out of the 1970s, where you have to catch the attention of your server in order to get anything -- from ordering to getting a refill for your coffee -- and you have the Waterwheel.

It's been around a while. It has a following. But it could be so much better it if only tried to iron-out the obvious service and 'attitude' issues of its staff. The food -- sometimes great, sometimes not. The atmosphere -- mixed (although it could be spectacular with a little TLC). The service makes it a 'poor' overall. Too bad too -- it could easily be the best in town.

The food was good, but the best part about this place is the actual waterwheel. There is a really old waterwheel in the building and you can walk through and check it out.

The food is fresh and delicious, and the service has never caused a problem. They have something for everyone, from vegetarian thai to cuban sandwiches. And their baked goods! Delicious!

Our garden club visited Grey Towers and stayed in Milford for lunch. The Waterwheel has a lovely menu with excellent pricing. The wait staff was very attentive and we all had a wonderful time. Several of us took home goodies from the bakery case. It was a nice finish to a fun day.

The food is consistently excellent and moderately priced. Great sandwiches, wholegrain pancakes with real maple syrup and fresh fruit, salads, and desserts. There is a working wood waterwheel from the early 1900s, and it and its mechanism are beautiful and fascinating works of art. The town of Milford itself has galleries and interesting shops. The Waterwheel Cafe serves dinner as well and the menu looks wonderful, but I have never been in Milford at dinner time. Photos and menus are available on their website. An added bonus is an outside seating area which provides a welcome alternative to leaving your well-behaved dog in the car.
