Erie KOA
Reviewed September 6, 2008

We love the McKean Koa. First of all it is extremely clean esp. for a campground. Not only the owners but all the employees take pride in their campground and you can tell. When we arrived last time our site didn't have an umbrella as is was supposed to and the owner ran out and got us a new one right away. They do have many rules to maintain the safety of the campground..for example there will be no fireworks flying at your awning at all hours of the nite. They have a great dinner friday which is so helpful when your trying to set up and the kids are hungry. My son gives the fish pond a 2 thimbs up and there's never a day when he hasn't caught 20 fish. We think Irwin is doing a great job growing the KOA with all the new cabins and while still maintaining the charm that the last owners had established . But its Beth and MIKE( the panny cake man) whom makes the KOA seem like a second home. We find it hard to go anywhere else!!!

We ( 2 adults and 4 kids ) stayed at The Erie Koa over 4th of July weekend . We found the staff to be very friendly , the campground clean and well maintained and the nightly entertainment to be great fun. The pool was above average and the fishing pond an added bonus. The owners and the managers were all very personable and made our stay that much more enjoyable.

The only suggestion I would have , since the campground is " away from it all " is that they consider a snack bar . ( Simple food ,sandwiches, light breakfast etc. )

Although located in the middle of nowhere there is lots for the kids to do and everyone is very friendly. There are great peddle carts to rent and Sunday mornings there is a free pancake breakfast that is really good. It was so nice not to have to get up and cook our last morning there. There is a bit of construction going on as they are putting in the cabins, but nothing to bother your stay. The pool wasn't open yet, but it looks like a nice area for the kids.

The showers were fairly clean, but they could have used a few more shower stalls. I really liked how they told you exactly what time each bath house would be closed for cleaning so you could plan accordingly.

If you're looking to take day trips Panama Rocks is relatively close by and the FREE nature center leading into Presque Isle was great for the kids.

We will definitely stay here again when we are in the Erie region.

We normally stay at the "Mom & Pop" type campgrounds but since this vacation trip was last minute their online reservation system seemed to be the best way to go forward. The offer of "Free" Wireless Internet service was the clincher as I had to maintain some sort of contact with the office and clients.

GOOD: Facilities are clean, modern and well maintained. Pool and nightly entertainment for the kids. Quiet family oriented campground. Easy access on and off the Interstate.

BAD: Wireless Internet, although free, is VERY sporadic. Good great signal first night at our site but 2nd and 3rd night we had to go to a picnic table at the activities building to get a signal. When I inquired as to what happed to the service I received an "I'm Not Sure" and Sorry About That". Some sort of excuse about clouds. Doesn't make any sense given the frequency Wi-Fi operates in.
What really turned me off was they had advertised a Sunday morning breakfast that was serving from 8:00am to 10:30am. We had packed everything up for a Sunday Morning departure and thought we would sit down to a great breakfast before we hit the road back to CT. Not quite. We arrived at 10:15am and the teenager at the register said "We're Closed". Not "Sorry, we're closed" just "We're Closed"! I looked at her puzzled and before I could say it wasn't 10:30 yet she said "We changed the time". Now, the times of 8:00am to 10:30am is printed right on the sheet they handed to us at check-in, along with a laundry list of Do's & Don't's. Now this page was freshly printed since it had the nightly movie schedule for the week, so this wasn't something they had printed way back at the beginning of the season. I know this all sounds a little petty, but it ruined my impression of what was a really great campground. The chain's don't seem to have the same "customer care" that the Mom & Pop's have.
