This has got to be one of the most amazing bakeries that I've ever walked in. Everything I love, everything I'm tempted by, everything super fresh! The most amazing creations - I gained weight just standing there... We also had lunch (salads of course), and they were quite good as well. I even took some chocolate covered bacon home for the kids!

Two signs say a lot about this place. One says if you want fast food, go to Subway (next door). The other says this is not Burger King, we do it our way. Baked goods that are huge, slathered with lots of great icing or glaze, or overstuffed with filling/crème. The sandwiches are served on slabs of fresh made bread that's big as Texas Toast. The tomato slices are thick, would make three or four slices at a fast food place, and the bacon is too thick to see through and there must be at least four ounces on a sandwich or in an omelet. Order lightly and eat large and you still might need a "to go box". The sweet tea is very good and the coffee was good also. It's not cheap but it IS very much worth it. Went back the second day for breakfast. This is a help yourself establishment for drinks. The food delivery people will bring you condiments and to go boxes. Out of the way but well worth your effort to find it.

Martinsburg is this little burg out of the way past Altoona. Not a lot of folks live there. Not a lot of shops are there. Not a lot to do there. With time to kill, we stumbled into Mamie's on a Saturday afternoon without any prexisting knowledge. It was really crowded, and people were practically sitting on each other waiting for tables. (In a place like this, that's usually a pretty good indicator that it's all about unfussy comfort food, good but nothing special.) The array of homemade baked goods was just staggering as was seeing something like a $5 donut. The staff was so cheerful and nice that I took a chance on the expensive donut. I've eaten at some really fine places, but that was the best donut, nay, possibly the best pastry I've ever had. Not in NYC, not in London, not in Paris. Martinsburg, Pennsylvania. We left with a bunch of donuts, cookies, etc. Everything was magnificent. I asked the locals in town, "Geez, what is it with this little place? Is it like Brigadoon--the best bakery in the word appears in Blair County, Pennsylvania, once every century?" They just smiled like they were all keeping this carefully guarded secret. The donut may have been $5, but oh, as donuts go I would have paid even more. Stunning, amazing baked goods, that's all I can add.

If you are ever in Martinsburg, PA, Mamie's Cafe is a must! They only serve breakfast and lunch, but the bakery is open until 5:00 PM. The options are creative, delicious, and plentiful! The tagline on their website is, "Wonderful Smells, Exquisite Taste and Beautiful Handcrafted Food"...that about sums it up! Mamie's Cafe is considered, "the home of PA’S Best Doughnuts!" The place is always busy, frequented by locals, tourists, and people traveling through, Mamie's Cafe is worth a visit...every time you are in Martinsburg, PA!

We had heard rave reviews about this place so decided to do a day trip to check it out. It was certainly worth the trip! The food is outstanding. Recommend the Reuben. The bakery selection unbelievable. All fresh baked, tasty and reasonably priced. The friendly staff and laid back atmosphere made this a most enjoyable experience. The only downside is the parking, which is not surprising, given how popular this place is becoming. Look for spaces in the church lot behind Mamie's.
