Owner description: The Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, established in 1861, is the first commercial pretzel bakery in America. As of August 2007, the site is under new ownership. The bakery and store have been completely renovated and are now operated once again by the Sturgis family. Visitors can tour the original pretzel bakery, see soft pretzels being made by hand, and find pretzels baked by the oldest pretzel baking family in the United States.

Before you go, first make sure the tour is available. Our first attempt coincided with a summer camp field trip, and we had to come back later because they would not allow us in. They teach you how to make pretzels, give you a little history and show you the ovens. There are also a free bag of pretzels on your way out, and, of course, a gift shop. It's not the most exciting thing in the world, but a fun activity if you are boredom and in the area.

Charming little tour. You get to make your own pretzel, which was fun, especially for my daughter. (btw, we visited prior to March 2011, but I can't remember the date). Lovely little town to stroll through. You pass through this village on the way to the Wolf Sanctuary, which was absolutely thrilling!

Tour is a little disappointing but worth the couple dollars so kids can twist pretzel dough.

If you're in Lititz, you may as well stop in here. You'll learn the history of pretzel making in PA, and get to see how they were actually made from dough to ovens. Small groups are taken on a tour through the factory (fairly small - remember it's OLD). You will hear history of pretzel, pretzel industry in the area, and see the process of making pretzels "back in the day". Patrons get a lesson in rolling and twisting his/her own pretzel.
A fun outing, but if you have very small children (3 or younger), think twice. A lot of listening required and not bright lights or colors to distract. Think old and dark. Fun for older kids and anyone else!
