Owner description: In 1954, the play, “Plain and Fancy” was a smash hit on Broadway. The Broadway hit drew a spotlight as the play was featured around the Amish lifestyle and their home: Lancaster County. This was the tipping point of a tourist boom the progressively grew from 25,000 annual visitors to 2,000,000 by 1960. Due to the increase of tourists and invasion of privacy of the Amish, Lancaster-local Adolph Neuber believe that there should be a place to accurately learn about the Amish, while respecting their privacy. An Amish family opened their home and property to visitors for tours. Since 1955, The Amish Farm and House has been connecting the Amish community and the public. “Amazing Tour Guide”
Reviewed April 23, 2012

We did a tour of the Amish Farm and House - we had an amazing guide who was very knowledgable and answered all our questions. We then got to roam the farm which was fun - there was a little baby goat and new piglets to look at, we rode the scooters and then we went on to look at all the farm equipment. Good gift store as well. I really enjoyed learning more about the Amish way of life and even got to see the Amish coming to Target in their horses and buggies.

“Great Educational Tour”
Reviewed April 16, 2012

Coming back here after 20 years it was a shame to see the property surrounded now by a Target & a strip mall. Attraction is now owned by a land developer who chose to keep this attraction going. The house tour was a great way for my daughter to learn about the Amish life. We did a quick barn tour as it was 85 out today and it felt it.

“This is the Farm and House, not the Amish Village. Recommend this one!”
Reviewed April 16, 2012 via mobile

This is the attraction located by Target. Our family (1st grader, teen, adults and seniors) enjoyed our visit and would recommend this highly - EXCEPT if it is a really hot day or they are crowded with bus tours. It was a beautiful day when we were there and we were able to really enjoy the various areas. I would imagine, though, that it could be uncomfortable on a very hot day, especially the house tour. As well, a bus tour arrived as we were leaving and their boisterous interaction and conversation brought a different feel to the atmosphere of the environment.
The guide who did the house tour was extremely knowledgable about the Amish culture and way of life, as she has lived amongst them for many years. Her respect for them was evident. We enjoyed our self-guided tour of the rest of the property. It was nice to take our time, stop for lunch at their picnic tables (ran to the Panera in the plaza next door to get sandwiches), and then resume our exploration. The gentleman in the woodworking building was doing woodburnings and whittling. He was fantastic and interacted with the kids well.
If you are able to find a nice day when they aren't too busy, this is a great tourist option that will be both enjoyable and informative. Well worth the cost.

“Great property, great bus tour”

The Amish house is very interesting and all the tour guides have lived in Lancaster for many years and so have a solid background as well as personal experiences with the Amish community.

“Another way of life”
Reviewed March 24, 2012

The tour of the Amish Farm and House answers any questions you may have had about how the Amish live and why they do things the way they do. The people conducting the tour are friends of the Amish community and obviously have a great deal of respect for the "Plain People". It definitely provides food for thought about a different way of life existing side by side with the culture we experience every day. Very interesting.
