Description: If you haven't visited El Serrano along Lancaster's Columbia Avenue lately, you haven't visited El Serrano. Or, perhaps it is more appropriate to say, you haven't visited Peru. Every square inch of the Latin-American restaurant has been extensively redesigned, upgraded and refurbished authentically, with architectural details similar to those of 150 years ago--to the point that stepping through its hand-carved mahogany doors is like entering a Peruvian hacienda. As owner Manuel Torres says, "it's like going on vacation."

Their is a dearth of Central and South American food in this area. Fortunately we have El Serrano. It's just delicious and the atmosphere is fantastic. It's a little pricey, but the food is really great, so it's worth it. Our server was great, but the service was a little slow. The one odd thing is that you get 1 basket of chips and you have to pay to have a refill if chips. My two teenage sons devoured the chips in no time, it might have been nice to at least have one extra basket.

This is one of our favorite restaurants in the area. The food has always been great and the atmosphere is very nice. We love the bar, and especially enjoy sitting in the little niche booths which are cozy and provide more intimate dining spaces for parties of 4 and smaller. The furniture and bar in the restaurant are all beautifully hand carved and provide the customer with an authentic peruvian atmopsphere for their dining experience. On weekends, they provide live music, and upstairs on the second floor of the restaurant they have a tapas component to their menu, providing 2 restaurants in one building.

The food here is terrific and varied; not the stuff you get everyday at the chain restaurants. But what really sets El Serrano apart - and qualifies it as my all time favorite restaurant - is the architecture of the restaurant itself. After your meal, be sure to ask your server for a tour. Everywhere you look there is museum quality woodwork by Peruvian craftsmen and unforgettable touches like the door hidden behind a bookshelf, the hand dug wine cellar and the brass bar that's a must see. I often bring out of town guests here and they are always amazed that there's a place like this in Central Pennsylvania.

The food was good but overpriced for what you received. Service was not so good, We had explained to the waitress that we were each ordering our own thing and wanted everything served at the same time. I explained this beause she had said they normally bring a oouple tapas for all to share and then another round. I wanted her to know that this is NOT how we wanted it but wanted all at one time. It took quite a while for our food and then the cold tapas were brought out but the hot tapas had not even be started. 3 of us ate and the other 2 had to wait. We were finished by the time they got their food. It did have a nice atmosphere. Gave a 3 but others rated 2 1/2.

As it had been some time since we had visited our favorite restaurant, we decided to give the Culturas section of the restaurant a try. The meal in this area is served tapas style, in which the customer picks several dishes which are then brought to the table in small portions in a timely fashion. We tried several dishes we had never had before and were pleased with all seven that we ordered. The service was very friendly and effficient and the dishes were spaced just right in their delivery.
One of the nicest things about this restaurant is the atmosphere. Everything is pleasing to look at; from the mahogany trim to the copper clad items in the main restaurant. We like looking out onto the courtyard as we dine and talk.
Prices are moderateand you can expect to spend approximately $80.00 to $100.00 for a nice meal with a cocktail for two people.
