We went to Wheatland and came away with a new found respect for a little known President. The home and estate on the fringe of Lancaster in PA Amish country. We had a great tour guide and she brought the era to life. So much of the house furnishings belonged to Buchanan and his family. The non-profit that runs the exhibit does a great job showing and telling the story. The folks are friendly and informative. The grounds are well kept and offer a nice place to stroll around.

Our recent tour of Wheatland was a most enjoyable visit. Our guide, Tim, was very enthusiastic and informative. The home was beautiful and so were the grounds. We would definitely recommend anyone visiting this historic property.

This is based only on the actual home tour as we didn't take the optional (fee) tours in the galleries, but those are also available at the visitor's center. Our group was very small so our guide was able to give us very thorough information and answer question about President Buchanan's life at Wheatland. If you have young children, the "Do Not Touch" policy is adhered to as items are originals or antiques from the time period. A senior in our group was reminded firmly when placing a hand on a table for balance. The grounds are small so not a lot of walking as with some of the other presidential homes. The home is not wheel-chair accessible as there are steps to the second floor. The senior in our group left her walker on the front porch since her husband was helping her, but the guide let us know of special chairs available in the home for resting.

I am so glad we finally visited. Both the museum and the house tour were very informative, and it is well worth the stop when in the area.
