“Romantic weekend”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2011

This was our first stay at Cove Haven. We stayed 2 nights in the Champagne Tower for just a romantic getaway. All in all we had a good time and it is very expensive. But where else would you find a heated pool in your room? I wouldn't spend the extra money for the Champagne Tower though. The outside of the rooms look like outdated motel rooms. And the round building with no windows is just odd (not sure what rooms those are). The grounds are nice. The Champagne Tower & probably all the rooms need a facelift. Most everything is outdated & a bit cheesy with red cheap furniture, red carpet, red bulbs in some lights, old tv in sitting room. There is a flat screen tv in the bedroom. But you're really not there to watch tv :). The wood burning fireplace in the sitting room is a nice touch. It's cheaper to bring your own logs. We spent lots of time in the heated pool, it was awesome! I can't review the massage table or sauna since we didn't use those but some people might appreciate having those available. There is also a steam shower but we didn't use that either. The round bed wasn't the most comfortable but not awful. And it is king sized so that's nice. The bathroom was clean but the furniture in the bedroom had not been dusted in awhile. Its bad when you wipe the side tables with your hand and there's dust on your hand. Pieces of the ceiling tile in the pool room had fallen onto the tile floor & were not cleaned up when we arrived or during our stay. That makes me feel like the floor in the pool room was not cleaned. Hmm, what else wasn't cleaned? There's a mini fridge but no microwave or coffee pot. Bring drinks & snacks to save money.

The included breakfast & dinner was ok. I personally don't like buffets since the food doesn't stay hot but it was not cold & there was a good variety & plenty of it. Friday night was Italian night & Saturday was steak night. Saturday's dinner was not a buffet & cooked to order. Service was good. Why they have group seating at a couple's resort is beyond me but you can ask to be seated alone. My husband is shy so that was a better option for us. They didn't have a problem accomodating us which is nice. I imagine if the resort is full, you might have to wait for a table for 2.

The band & comedian is also included. We went 1 night & had an ok time. Remember, alcohol is not included in the price. The XXX Newlywed Game on Saturday was funny but not if you are offended by sex talk & language. Phil did warn everyone at the show on Fri night. They serve nachos & wings then for an extra charge.

Phil does the deer feeding at 4:15 and its a must see! There are lots of deer & its a joy to be able to see them up close. Drive slow through the resort & be alert because they are everywhere & sometimes just stroll across the road.

Since you are on your own for lunch, there is a cafe on sight at an extra charge. But usually we ate a late breakfast so didn't really need lunch. There is free wifi in the cafe but not the rooms.

I can't comment on the activities since we didn't do anything. But they have pool tables, arcade games, ice skating, roller skating, mini golf, etc.

So, like I said, we had a good time because our main focus was reconnecting as a couple. We may go again when we save up some money but might try out one of the sister properties.

My wife and I have stayed at this resort and its sister resorts many times before. Indeed we had looked forward to our trips to the resort. But this was our last. Why:
- The resort used to do everything possible for the guests - no more
- the resort used to be charged and designed for couples and sheer eroticism - no more now innuendo has taken that place
- the resort used to really be something special now it is just a hotel with some unusual rooms

Really sad we will never go back because we want to remember the Poconos the way that they were.

I am updating my original review of Cove Haven. Doreen and I have been to CH 3 times since October 7, 2011.

All I can say is that if you give this place a chance you will have a great time. I agree with other reviewers that the rooms are dated and that the place seems worn a bit...but that is where the problems end for us.

We've stayed twice in the Garden of Eden Apple Suites and once in the Champagne Towers. Every time that we stay the rooms (though a bit dated!) are immaculately clean and very romantic. For those that mention a "smell"...of course there is a smell! There is a pool in most rooms and they are treated with bromine. You get a hint of that when you walk into the room but it isn't unpleasant or overpowering. It's just what you have to do to treat a pool. I was glad that they use bromine and not chlorine because chlorine ruins your hair, your jewelry, and stinks to high heaven! Even in our smoking room there wasn't a hint of smoke when we arrived, and though I am a smoker I am used to smoking outside so this was nice.

The round beds are awkward because they are basically king-sized beds with the corners cut off, but we have never had a problem with them. Sure they aren't like our own king-sized bed at home but the worst thing about them is that we usually sleep too late and miss breakfast. In the future we will order breakfast in bed!

I challenge anybody to tell me how it is a down-side to have a jacuzzi, a pool, and a sauna in your room, no matter how dated they might be. If you are going to Cove Haven to rip apart the red carpets and the cheesy wallpaper in the rooms then I am guessing you are missing the point here!

As for the food...on our last trip we dined at "Strip Night"...The food was so good and so bountiful that we cannot imagine who can actually go back for seconds, let alone order dessert! The one minor fail is that alcohol is a separate charge, but we ordered two drinks each at dinner and the specialty ones delivered. I cannot wait to go back in January for a couple more X-Rated Martinis! I should add here that the drinks are charged to the room but at check-out they were 2 dollars less per glass than our bar tab...

The whole point of this place to me seems to be a getaway where a couple can get away and be a couple. We love this place! As for the group dining...at check-in they tell you that you can request private dining. We've done this on all 3 trips and we still get outstanding service.

In short, we've been to Cove Haven 3 times from October 7th to November 15th...we will be going back on January 20th and will be treating another couple. Oh, and for the record, only one of us is over 50...

Room Tip: Plan to enjoy some really good down-time with your partner! This place is perfect for that! Also...

Prior to heading out to the Cove Haven resort, I read the Trip Advisor reviews, but thought "how bad can it be, it's a Starwood property (think St. Regis, "W", Westin). Sadly, the reviews were spot on. This place needs a bull dozer. The smell of the rooms alone should cause anyone to flee. Think musty, mildew and disinfectant. The round bed with sheets that don't fit and a mattress that must be 20 years old is less than inviting. In addition, we were forced to sleep in our sweatshirts and long pants, since the small heater is well removed from the bedroom area. We left it on all night, but never did get warm. If you must go, avoid the food at all costs. At dinner, my wife and I had salads that came with enought dressing to fill a punch bowl. Our pasta was so full of garlic (and I like garlic) that our eyes were tearing up. We left without eating much of anything. I understand that the hotel likes group seating at dinner (more efficient), but this seems very inconsistent with a couples resort where people go to be, well.....couples. In terms of activities, there were pool tables, pinball machines, indoor ice skating, etc. All dated, many not working.

We have stayed at many Starwood resorts worldwide, and this was by far the worst. I can't believe Starwood would take this property on. It advertises itself as a "couples" resort with all the amenities. Starting with the decor of the whole resort that is definately dated and in desperate need of an update. The room had a musty smell. The bed sheets and blanket were cheap and thin and the bedspread was so disgusting looking that we took it off immediately. With a little effort, the bathroom would be ok, but cheap towels, cheap soap and shampoo really are inexcusable since you are promoting pampering with your loved one. A little effort on the amenities would be very helpful. The shower was the worst, and the water flow on the jacquzzi was so slow it took 45 min to fill up the tub. Only good thing was didn't run out of hot water. The "fun" amenities are so dated and redunent it is laughable. How many pinball machines and billard tables can you have??? Dinner was unbelievable -- totally unaware that you have to eat dinner with 3 other couples you don't know and it is a set menu. So, picture that you are with your significant other and you can't eat dinner alone in the dining room but with people who you don't know!! The end to this perfect day was that we put a 3 hr log in the room fireplace and the flue was not working properly, so the room filled up with smoke and windows don't open, so spent cold evening with door open just to be able to breath. We really wanted to have fun and explore this resort, but were so disappointed that we left after less than 24 hrs. It really is a glorified summer camp. Although the people we had dinner with were frequent visitors and loved it, we just felt it was too poorly run and disappointing. Other people have commented that if you are under 50 you won't enjoy it - well if you are over 50 you won't enjoy it either!!!

So disappointing. The receptionist are not friendly, especially the guy named Ron. The place is just discusting.. The rooms don't smell clean, if you have higher expectations like hubby and I, that's no place for you. We are definitely not going back there. The food is not good. Please, change the room doors, RED? The place looks like a brothel... It's so cheesy..ordered Chocolate in the room, and it was melting all over. If you have been to nice beautiful gateways, don't even bother to go here. I feel dirty for even going and sleeping there... Not worth the money!!!! Hubby and I were highly disappointed...

My husband and I are 25 and we were celebrating our 1 year anniversary. We wanted to 'get away' without going to far... and for a young couple... who wouldn't want their own pool?! We stayed in the Garden of Eden Apple. Here are the pros and cons of our stay:
CONS
• Rooms looked as old as we were
• Nasty smell when we first walked in... room was completely dark and cold (not romantic at all... I was picturing rose petals or something)
• Stains on carpet and the two chairs that we had
• The pool had a nasty looking cover on it (you would think they'd take it off)
• the TV was very bulky and the picture quality sucked
• there was a mini fridge in the bathroom... random...
• The Bose system in the room was very out dated and would only work if we used the remote
• Dinner the first night was a buffet, we sat with 4 other couples (greeeeat, 'SO' romantic) the food tasted like it was sitting out for a while (and we got their at 6 when it started) Dessert was ok
• when we got back to our room we had our chocolate covered strawberries delivered... I never would have paid $45 for them had i known!!
• Saturday at breakfast... still sat with strangers, food was bland
• The activities they had around were a JOKE - we roller skated on a basketball court and then we had to pay for all the games in the arcade (yes I know you usually pay with quarters, but for an 'all-inclusive' place, I expected not to pay another dime)
• The music played throughout the arcade and spooner's cafe was oldies music
• At the sports palace there is a retarded indoor 9-hole mini golf course
• We got bored within a couple of hours
• at dinner we requested a seat by ourselves, BUT from beginning to end, we were there for 2 and 1/2 hours!! The service sucked that night and the food just sucked
• We went to the night club that night and the band was ok, but the comedian sucked - again, everything was extra money
• The bed was hard as a rock!
• the next morning we opted for breakfast in bed so we can just leave to go home.. our food was delivered in a cardboard box like we ordered from McDonald's or something. ARE YOU SERIOUS?! ugh... I couldn't wait to go home.

PROS
• We only stayed 2 days
• The staff is friendly... and never stop apologizing for making you wait
• Nice wildlife

Overall... I wish I had a few million dollars to buy this place and redesign the whole thing. I have so many great ideas for them that would be worth the money they charge their guests. Right now it's a total rip-off and I won't go back until they renovate.

Room Tip: Don't fart in the Garden of Eden Apple... there are no windows and no ventilation!
