“Decent food, clean room, no late check out”
Reviewed October 22, 2011

I was doubtful with the negative reviews of Cove Haven because they were from one-time reviewers. Recently I cashed SPG points and stayed there for one night. Here is my experience.

I stayed at the Harbour Tower room with round bed, heart shaped Jacuzzi and glass shower. The bed is not Sheraton Sweet Sleeper bed. The room décor is ancient but it is comfortable, clean and well-maintained. It has an old TV with integrated VHS player. All fixtures work properly. The missing parts are additional outlets to charge mobile phone and other electronics. Don’t forget to bring bubble bath since they are not provided, or you can use shampoo.

At the dining table, I was seated in the same table with other people I did not know. I met nice people from Philadelphia and Toronto. Food is decent: salad, bruschetta, pasta with three types of sauce (Alfredo, Marinara and Vodka), ravioli, meatballs, chicken parmesan, fried calamari, cod, sole with crabmeat (crab is perhaps 1%, the rest is just filling), sausages, steam vegetable, zucchini, tiramisu, lemon cake, canoli, chocolate fountain with strawberry and marshmallow.

See my photos of the “Quickie” breakfast-in-bed. My friend told me the breakfast looks like quick delivery from Burger King. The difference is you get free small Italian Spumante (alcoholic sparkling wine). Breakfast is decent. As a Starwood Gold Preferred Guest, I requested late check out at 2 PM. My request was denied. I had to leave at 1 PM.

Overall I like the resort. I do not have time to check the night entertainment and other activities. I would come back to the resort if they let me have a late check out.

My partner and I went to Cove Haven October 7th - 9th. We booked the Garden of Eden Apple Suite. When we arrived we immediately wondered, "What did we get ourselves into?" From the really cheesy sign at the end of the driveway to the odd looking buildings and sparse landscaping we thought we had arrived in a time warp. We drove around the resort for a few minutes "admiring" the odd looking buildings, as well as the rare few couples walking around like they were a bit dazed and confused...We finally bit the bullet and went to check in, and the first thing that struck us was the Cove's famous "blush bed" which is nothing more than an odd sort of round bed with mirrored headboard...and yes, this bed was set up right in the check-in building. We immediately noticed one of those Purell hand sanitizer stations next to the bed, and of course we began to wonder if this was actually the "throw-down" bed that you get to use while your room is readied...Check-in was fast and courteous and even though we were the only same-sex couple we would see all weekend, only a few guests looked at us like they had just discovered us in the middle of a crop circle. We received our keys to our room which by the way was ready over an hour before check-in time, and made our way to a very odd cluster of round buildings without windows...We panicked because the exterior of the building though neat and tidy was completely devoid of land-scaping, and the walkway around the building was fairly worn AstroTurf. We opened the door to the room and were immediately greeted with outdated furnishings, more red carpet than you could expect to see at the Oscars, and BOOM! Right as you get into the room, there is the red heart-shaped jaccuzzi tub. A few steps down into the sunken bedroom area was the "blush bed" and a small log-burning fireplace. The front room and the sleeping area were both outfitted with outdated tube-style TV sets (a huge one in the bedroom and a smaller one in the jaccuzzi area)...I did a quick inspection and everything was immaculate, and I am a nurse so I check these things! The best part was yet to come though...The pool room...The glass-enclosed pool room contained a small pool with 92 degree water, and mirrors around the whole thing. A small door off the pool room housed a dry sauna which was clean and very, very tiny...and not terribly toasty as we would find out later in the evening. The first night we opted for room service because I wasn't ready for the dining room experience as I am fairly shy in new situations. The food was okay and reasonably priced "bar food" and it was delivered hot, and by a very nice person. Though the Cove is all-inclusive room service is not, but we knew that going in...The only other dining experience that we had was the next morning at breakfast which was in the main dining room. The food was buffet style and the decor was again...outdated. The focal point of the dining room was this huge plastic champagne glass about 8 ft tall and it had some murky looking bubbly liquid in it. We opted to dine alone as it appeared that the other guests were fairly rowdy, shouting back and forth with Dennis, the waiter. He seemed like a very nice guy, and very accomidating, but his "Coffee, Tea, or Me" banter with every single guest was cringe-worthy at best, but I didn't take it to heart. He was prompt and entertaining a did a little cup-flipping trick with the coffee cup. As I mentioned, the breakfast (as with the other meals) was buffet-style which is always a turn-off for me and my partner, but the food was tasty and certainly bountiful. If either of us was the "strap on your feedbag" type we could have gourged ourselves but we are pretty much good for one decent plate of food. We skipped the all-inclusive "Strip Night" where apparently you can eat all the strip steaks you can squish down your gullet, but not because we didn't like the food at breakfast, but because we like a more intimate setting. For dinner that evening we went to the Alpine Haus German restaurant about 15 miles away. For two Germans on vacation that was definitely a hit! I should also mention that activities are included but they seemed a bit campy for us and we really weren't there for the archery anyway!

Here is a summary of my pros and cons:

Pros:

*The rooms totally deliver. Great pool, great fireplace, great jaccuzzi.
*Privacy!
*Grounds and room were clean and well-maintained.
*Every employee we encountered was pleasant and helpful
*Entire experience was cheesy and very retro, which was part of the fun!
*Romantic in a kitchy sort of way...You need to be prepared that this isn't a 5-star hotel, it's a funky, retro, kind of goofy place where once in your room it takes about 15 minutes to forget the stress of your life...
*Decor is outdated but if you keep an open mind you actually start to really get a kick out of that!

Cons:
*All-inclusive rate is missed on you if you don't like cruise-ship style dining and having to pay extra for alcohol and room service.
*Visually it is kind of bland, with little revenue spent on landscaping what appears to be a huge piece of quite lovely land.
*Outdated decor everywhere you look, but this I also list as a "Pro" if you get a kick out of that sort of thing!

In closing, I just got an email today from Cove Haven offering their best accomidation, the "Champagne Tower Suite" for 400 dollars less than we originally paid for our first 2-night 3-day stay. I immediately booked for the first weekend in November. Our next trip will be less than a month from the day we checked out! I guess that even with my individual ratings of various areas of service, I would give the place an over-all 5 star rating simply because we sort of felt homesick when we left. Sure it was cheesy in a whole bunch of ways, but in the end who doesn't like cheese?

Room Tip: The Garden of Eden Apple Suite has no windows...Depending on your desire for daylight this is a good...

We stayed at Cove Haven for our fourth time this year as Forever Lovers. We loved it too! We have stayed at all three resorts in the Champagne Tower and Garden of Eden. Check in was a breeze and our room was ready at 2 pm. The food was excellent with superb service. During our stay our phones didn’t work, and maintenance came right away to repair them. The maintenance man provided us a shorter way home than mapquest, and it saved us a 1/2 hour. Dennis the Menace was excellent in the restaurant. We checked out XXX Hollywood games, and Honest Phil, as always with the couples provided an entertaining show. It is definitely worth checking out and remember be specific. We were informed to check out Bingo and Deer Feeding with Phil that we will take in next year. We come prepared with our lawn chairs to enjoy the beautiful weather with the view of the Pocono’s mountains. We bring our coffee machine for coffee in the room. We learned this year that you can get dinner delivered that consists of entree, dessert and pop. This saved us money as before we would order in room service. We booked our reservations for next year and as Forever Lovers you get 2 free upgrades guaranteed prior to check out. Overall, it was excellent and we can’t wait to go back next year to stay in Garden of Eden (rotating rooms provides a nice variety)!!!

We didn't have the time or money for serious traveling, but still wanted to get away for a few days for our anniversary. About a 6 hour drive to the Poconos (gorgeous this time of year) got us 2 nights in Cove Haven. We didn't expect much more than pretty fall colors & a comfortable room, & we were more than happy with our stay.

Value/Suite Upgrade: I wanted the Cove Fantasy that comes with your own pool, but didn't want to spend the extra $100/night, so we booked a Juliette Suite 2 nights for $499. It was $627 with tax & 18% gratuity (no need to leave a tip -- at least that's how I interpreted it.) We checked in about 4-4:30 pm and were given an upgrade to the Cove Fantasy. I was thrilled!

Room: Definitely designed in the '80's, the rooms were pretty cheesy, but had very cool elements. We loved the 'starlights' above the bed & throughout the room. I thought the 'Blush bed" was comfortable, but it's a Temurapedic-like material and it's hard to move around, or get out of the bed. One good point of 1980's cheese is mirrors everywhere, so it's very easy to get ready for dinner, etc. There is a fridge, as well as a little table with 2 armchairs, so it's very easy to eat in the room if you so choose. The fireplace was very cozy. We sat up there with a fire one night. Hubby is a cabinet guy & didn't like the laminate everywhere, but once again, a few updates are all that is needed. In the bathroom is a heart-shaped whirlpool tub that was very cozy, especially with bubble bath. I didn't like the shower head. I guess it's supposed to simulate rain, but I really didn't think there was any shower head, but just a pipe. It's a lot like showering from a hose. The Pool Room is off the bathroom and also contains a sauna. The pool was maybe 5x8 & not very refreshing as it was always hot in there & the water was bath temperature. It might be nice coming in from skiing, but not very nice for anything else. I'm very glad we didn't pay the extra $100 per night, as I would have been disappointed. Also I don't know if they have any accessible rooms, but this one was 2 levels, about 4 steps.

Food: Breakfast & dinner is included - including tips. After reading the reviews here, I didn't hold much hope of good food, but it was delicious - all of it! They will seat you with other couples (think cruising) unless you request a private table. The night we did that, we still talked to the people seated at the next table, but at least I didn't feel like I was interrupting their conversation when I wanted to talk to my husband. We got breakfast in bed one day, which is cereal and/or breakfast sandwiches made on a delicious ciabatta bread. The other morning we went to the dining room for a 'Champagne Breakfast' (Tuesdays & Thursdays) which was buffet-style, typical breakfast buffet foods. The only thing I wish they'd have had is the fruit sauces there are so much of for dinner's desserts. Strawberries would've been terrific on the Belgian waffles. The waffles were soft, but had a good flavor. The first night dinner was also a buffet, which I typically avoid. But we were hungry after driving so far, and the food exceeded my expectations. There were a few pastas, roasted chicken, 2 kinds of fish, rice & beans, a seafood fry (my favorite), and a chef to slice beef. There were tons of dessert selections too. I got a peanut butter pie that was also very good. The 2nd night was flank steak with tomato-avocado salsa, rosemary lemon chicken or blackened tilapia. I got the chicken, but much preferred hubby's beef. The veggies were good, but the mashed potatoes tasted like instant. They had a make-your-own-sundae-bar, which was fun & yummy, not that either of us could finish our masterpieces.

Activities: We didn't do much, but we walked around alot to familiarize ourselves with the resort. The Marina was closed for the season, which was a bummer because I wanted get a paddleboat. We did play 1 game of pool but it was very hot in that room. Love the sliding board! We had a drink at the Lookout Lounge & stopped in the spa pools. That's a very cute room with lots of hot tubs. We took a horse-drawn carriage ride, which cost $20 (from an outside vendor). We also tipped the driver $5 since he was amusing & took our picture. It probably wasn't worth the money, as it only goes up & down the main road, but it was nice & we had fun. We also went to the deer feeding. That was pretty cool. The gift shop is where you will view your pictures ($10 for 5x7). Your dinner shot is photoshopped onto a nice background. They also have souvenirs, an x-rated section, and a candy store downstairs.

Service: I have no complaints about the service. Everyone we came in contact with was helpful, very nice, and appeared to be in a good mood. Everyone seemed happy to share information. But we had no issues, so I'm not sure how their problem resolution is.

Overall: The name of the game is CHEESE! If you can get into it & enjoy it, it will be fun. Otherwise, it may not be the resort for you. It is not as gaudy as I thought it would be, but definitely dated. Buy a picture with you in a heart-shaped-glass & roses. You can feed a deer from your room if you pick the right room (Garden of Eden Apple) and know how to do it. If I can add photos after the fact, I will.

Room Tip: Champagne Towers seem to be the way to go, from all I've heard. But I didn't want all that...

Don't believe the bad reviews you read about this place. We just got back from a 2-day, 1 night stay at Cove Haven Resort & wish we had stayed for 2-3 nights. This place is very cool & very retro. Yes, the rooms are somewhat dated but we've stayed at many resorts & the rooms here are very spacious, clean, well-maintained, romantic & fun! You've got to go just to experience the amenities in the room. Ours came with a round bed (comfortable), a heart-shaped jacuzzi for 2 and a glass shower in the middle of the room.

The staff was exceptional especially Dennis the waiter at dinner. He knows how to treat people. Check-in was a breeze. Activities are easy to use and included with price. We never ran out of things to do. Me & my wife practiced archery at the ourdoor range, hiked on the trail (20 minutes long), went to the Newlywed game, the comedy club, took a horse drawn carraige ride and so much more.

Warning: the Newlywed game is XXX. We walked out of the show because of the language & content. Our fault. They warn you it will be XXX.

The comedy show was exceptional! The resort had a Top 40 band that played for hours. The comedian, Willie Asbury, was hilarious. We sat next to him at breakfast the next morning. He's been performing for 20-30 years with some of the biggest comedians in the industry. Once again, all included in our night's stay.

The food was delicious! Me & my wife had the salmon for dinner. That was after 2-3 appetizers. Dessert was also top notch. Breakfast in the morning had as many choices as an all-inclusive in Mexico!

You won't regret your stay at Cove Haven! They have some great entertainment lined up for the Fall.

We had an amazing time at Cove Haven. We visited in September, staying 3 nights/4 days in the Cove Fantasy Suite. The room was amazing...large and spacious, hot tub and pool. The activities were fun...we took advantage of the driving range, indoor/outdoor archery, roller skating, pinball, video games, indoor mini golf, and more. Despite what some people have said, the food is really good, and the desserts are amazing...we left each dinner service stuffed. Breakfast was good as well, and if you didn't want the buffet you could order from the kitchen. The wait staff was friendly and for the most part attentive. While we were there, Brian Reagan performed and he was hilarious. It was a wonderful anniversary trip.

Here's the except for...
1) Despite being advertised, there were no speed boat rides, and the paddle boats were stored away, despite the beautiful weather.
2) The bands that played were kind of cheesy, playing old music and making you feel as though you were at a bad high school dance.
3) The pool room in our room had a few cracks in the mirrors, and the dry sauna didn't really heat up at all.
4) The shower in this particular room could barely fit one person...you'd think with all the room in this suite they could have made a larger shower.
5) There's a very strange/unpleasant smell in the cafe. It was there every day we visited.
6) There are some broken down buildings (collapsed roof, etc.) in the middle of the property...not sure what the deal is with those.
7) The check-in clerk wasn't very friendly. Not unpleasant, just not very welcoming.
8) Some of the decor is cheesy and outdated. Couldn't definitely use some updating.
9) While I didn't go in this room, I walked by the Parrot Lounge and it seemed kind of dark just thrown together, not very welcoming.
10) The hot tubs in the indoor pool area by the lake definitely needed some cleaning. I felt gross after going in them.
11) Cost is a bit high considering alcohol and lunch are not included.

That's about it. I'd definitely go back, but they could definitely make some improvements/updates.

Cove Haven is in our opinion the best of the three resorts. However it does have it's good and bad points. Our room (Cove Fantasy) was ready when we arrived and it was clean. The bed is very comfortable. The only problem we had with the room was the cable kept going out. In fact we are early risers but could never get the cable to work before 8 AM. We even had an engineer stop by to check it out but he could not figure out why it was acting up. We are first time forever lovers and was kind of looking forward to the guarenteed forever lovers upgrade opon arrival. It did not happen. we were told, "sorry, we're too busy this weekend and there are no upgrades available." We do like the way the resort is spread out and that there is the shuttle to take one wherever one needs to go on the resort. Once you park you do not need you car until you are ready to leave unless you want to go off property. Or if you like, they have bicycles for you to use. We especially enjoyed the deer feeding by Phill. During the feeding, there were about 30 deer that gathered around when he called. For the most part, the food in the dining room was pretty good. Unfortunately, "Strip Night" was a complete failure. My wife ordered her steak mediun rare and I ordered mine mediun well. Her steak was well. My steak was totally so far over well done that it was close to burned. After a few bites we both lost our appetite and tried to fill up on potato and desert. Other people at our table had the same problem with their steak as well. When we mentioned the bad steaks to our server she said she would tell the cook. The next day, in talking with a different server, we were told that when she serves the steaks she immediately has everyone cut into the steak and if not right will get it replaced immediately. Our server on strip night did not do this. Having said that, the breakfast buffet is great and so were all the other dinners we had. I have a rule. That rule is to never ever, use any hotel/resorts automatic checkout. Upon checking out, we found a $35 bar charge to our room that was not ours. This was taken care of in a friendly, efficent manner. Thanks. Overall, we really like Cove Haven and will most likely return.
