“Super Waterpark!”
Reviewed February 28, 2010

I read a lot of the reviews for Split Rock AFTER I had a made a reservation for a 4 day visit with the family. My personal experience with reviews is that if you're not a friendly, well mannered person you probably meet unpleasant hotel staff that don't have a lot of desire to help you. The opposite always holds true as well. I found the staff at SR to be be very friendly and pleasant despite the fact that there was a 2' snow storm the night we arrived and 57 members of the staff stayed at the resort that night so they could cater to us the following day. Namely, Joanne, Dana and Shameera our waitress', Robert and Pedro who also waited on us, Pete the Bartender and the extremely nice Hostess Patty (the Peruvian Princess!) who made us smile every morning. Our suite was very well appointed and was large enough that if we so desired we all could have quiet time alone without even knowing the others were even in the room. I've read some of the other reviews concerning cockroaches and other nonsense and I saw nothing of the kind. There is also an activities list printed every morning that has something for everyone to do. But there's also bowling, an arcade, fitness and business centers, billiards, shuffleboard, tennis courts, snow tubing, hot tubs, massage all right on site. The H2O Waterpark was were we spent most of our time and it is the most modern part of the resort and just fantastic. A really fun place to be when the snow is piling up outside. All in all, my family and I had a wonderful time at Split Rock!

We chose Split Rock because the brochures and advertisements made it look great! We were very disappointed. The water park was great in that it was not very busy and we got to stay and play all day, twice, however it was pricey and was not included as part of our timeshare package. We stayed at Westwood Villas, supposedly in a rennovated unit. HA! The carpet was disgusting, only half the stove worked, the floors were all sticky, the utensils and pots and pans were filthy, bed linens were old, crusty and browned. They were extremely skimpy on towels - one tiny one per person - including one dishtowel - and all were very small, crusty and yellowed. The heat ran and rattled continuously. Bare minimum of supplies and cookware. Very dark, old and dirty decor. When questioning staff about the quality and condition of our villa, we were told that the resort is only a three star resort and we shouldn't have expected any better. No offers to move us or reclean or provide additional supplies. All activities took place at the main hotel. We were told there was a shuttle but we never saw it. We got a HUGE snowstorm while we were there - never saw a staffer to shovel the walkway or even bother to clean up the parking lot for over 24 hours. My husband had to go hunt down a shovel and spend an hour shoveling just so we could get out of our unit, never mind unbury the car to get up to the waterpark and of course - shuttle wasn't available because of the snow. Nowhere to park at the hotel because all the spots were snowed in with huge drifts. Activity staff was friendly enough but most of the time acted like they were on valium. Business center computers unavailable due to viruses. Swimming pool was freezing. We've had nicer stays and been treated nicer at Motel 6 for $59 per night. Tried repeatedly to get a massage in the "spa" but the one therapist was completely booked all the time. $1.00 toll to get on the property was ridiculous. Supposedly this is to help in the cost of maintenance - not sure why we had to shovel so much then! I would not recommend Split Rock resort for any extended stay!

Although from first appearance the hotel has not been renovated in recent years it has plenty of amenities to keep everyone busy. We would have liked to see assistance with our luggage as you can imagine we had alot with a large family and because of the fact that this hotel had only 1 elevator (which was inconvenient). but we managed. During our stay we ran into plenty of areas that were experiencing alot of guests at once and at times seemed to be hurried but all interactions with the staff were pleasant and most staff always asked if there was anything else we needed. We enjoyed the numerous activities that were organized throughout the hotel as it allowed us to spend time alone without the kids, even if only for a few hours. The food was above average and moderately priced. The service in the restaurants was quick and pleasant. The pizzeria, where we ate 3 meals was always busy but the staff handled all of our meals quickly. We were disappointed with the comfort of the pull out couch. Although the hotel appears run down in some areas our overall experience was very good because of the staff and their friendliness. Upon check out, not only were we thanked for our business, but invited back. We will definitely return because of the reasonable prices, abundance of activities, (they have a movie theatre and bowling alley - where do you see that anymore?), and friendly staff.

This was the worst vacation that we ever had. Dirty filfthy hotel in the twilight zone. Roaches running all over the place. Dirty rooms. Urine stained threadbare carpets. Lousy overpriced food. They nicked and dime you to death for everything. Ignorant lazy staff. These rooms still have keys to lock and unlock. Is this 1959 or what? The indoor pool stinks of clorine and they give you paper towels at the pool to dry off with. All in all the worst timeshare in the world. It should be removed from RCI for being disgusting!!

My husband and my two children (7 and 2 yrs old) stayed at the Willowbrook. We loved it!
It was nice, big and modern. the kids also had a blast at H2O water park. Our last day we went sledding down the steep slope.. They did not want to leave! Its a great place to go with the family and friends!

To be objective let me start by stating that the pre-teen and her five year old sister had the best time at the resort and enjoyed both the skiing and the water park immensely. I was not fond of finding a poison adled cockaroach crawlling up the hallway wall after detecting the smell of bug spray the previous night in what was apparently coming from a bomb set off in the adjacent suite. Made me careful to re-wash all the utensils and exchange the towels and linens the following morning. We got what seemed to be a great discounted rate from SkyAuction months previous to our trip and were it not for the great price over the MLK weekend I would have complained verily to a non-caring staff at the front desk. The bartenders tell you right off they are out of anything you may want to drink. The Galleria restaurant meal was bland and only saved by the salad bar. We did not get in our second round of tennis due to a EFFA (frozen foods) convention and they also had fully taken over the waterpark the first choice afternoon we wanted to go. Tried to watch football at the Lodge Inn bar. No good beers and no bar menu added to old out of focus projection television forced us to leave at half-time and go to Nick's Restaurant off site. Great Pizza and Sushi at Nick's, by the way. Must try Piggy's for brunch! Let me just state that everything good seemed to be away from resort. I will go back to area but stay away from Split Rock resort.

The only thing Split Rock has going for it is the location. Its convient to both Bigh Boulder and Jack Frost ski areas. Beyond that there is really nothing good that I can say. Way overpriced for what you get. Not worth the $464 for two nights. The rooms (furniture, walls, flooring, windows, bathrooms) are in horrible shape - this is after we paid extra for the "renovated building". The building from the outside looks like a factory - not very appealing. This place should be considered a motel and should charge appropriately. Would NEVER stay here again. We normally will rent a house in one of the local developments when we go skiing. The cost ends up being the same. But given it was a holiday weekend and our trip was planned last minute - the houses were all booked.
