Owner description: See PA's first show cave. Discovered in 1871, and open to the public shortly thereafter, Crystal Cave has been operating without interruption since that time. The one hour cave tour begins with a video presentation describing the history of Crystal Cave and the formation of caves. Guides take you into the cave and give you both an educational and enjoyable tour. Crystal Cave is known for its abundance of formations in various size and color. Over five million adults and children have been thrilled by this subterranean museum of nature. After your tour you may want to visit our gift and souvenir shop, historical exhibit, authentic Amish Buggy, real Indian Totem Poles, and shaded picnic park all on 150 scenic acres. Other activities open seasonally include miniature golf, panning for gemstones, Ice Cream Parlor, Crystal Cave Cafe, and Museum.

I'm not a spelunker but I guess this cave is ok if you like lots of bats. It is quite cool in the summer.

This is a great experience. A great family experience, able to show our kids something natural and unique.

My daughter is a cavern enthusiast so when we were going to Allentown, she implored us to stop at Crystal Cave in Kutztown on the way.

After winding along Crystal Cave Rd long enough to have convinced ourselves that we were were lost, there it was! (So have some faith)

We were just in time for the last tour which my wife was chagrined to discover involved a STEEP walk uphill. Out of breath, we settled in to a small theater where we took in a short film explaining how caverns and their formations are created. This would have been quite useful to grasp the wonder of the multiple caverns we had seen before this one.

Descending into the cave, the tour staff emphasized the mechanisms behind how the cavern was formed involving geologic movements and water flow. They also provided history of the cavern's discovery and its uses for recreation. They also cover, alas, the unfortunate effects of human beings touching the formations and the other things they do while trying to see the formations. You learn a LOT about caverns on this tour which, as I've said, would have enhanced other tours at other caves. The educational density of this tour elevated the rating from the 3 stars I would have given it for a rather plain-coloured, rocky cave with muddy, messy path.

Crystal Cave has its fair share of rocks that vaguely resemble other things. (Don't miss the fork of twirled spaghetti at the start of the tour! My daughter spotted it, the tour guide agreed. If they use it in the tour, give my daughter props!)

Our youthful guide was patient and made sure everyone saw every feature and answered questions well. For the $15 we paid, there are definitely worse values in cavern tours out there.

If you hear of someone planning to visit a cave for the first time and they wonder which one to go to first? Suggest they start with Crystal Cave in Kutztown before hitting the biggies like Luray. They can get a better appreciation of the "big guns" when they take in the deeper understanding of the wonders of our planet displayed at humble Kutztown Crystal Cave.

We were in the middle of a heat wave, so we decided to go visit Crystal Cave. The GPS guided us to the location with no problem. Parking was free and plentiful. However, this location is NOT handicap accessible and no strollers allowed in the cave. A lot of walking is involved and you will be stepping on narrow stone steps leading to the highest part of the cave. Don't forget to bring a light jacket/sweater with you because the temperature of the cave maintains between 55-60 degrees Fahrenheit year round. The guides were wonderful, informative and have a sense of humor. There is a snack area and an ice cream shop in the area plus a nice souvenir store.

We had a great time at the caves. Weather was in the 90's when we went so the cool 54 degree air was great. Make sure to bring some sweatshirts for small children as they don't handle the cold temperatures as well.
