“Excellent Mexican Food”
Review of La Pena Mexicana

La Pena is a truly authentic Mexican restaurant. None of the Tex-Mex, watered down versions of food that seem to dominate the landscape these days. Everything we had was top notch, including the staples of refried beans (the best I've ever had, including in Mexico) and rice. Both of us had superb, flavorful food, served at the table within about 10 minutes of ordering. The only thing that prevents a 5 star rating is the ambiance, but that's not why you should go to La Pena.

Don't be fooled by the yellow and brown striped exterior or by the utilitarian looking interior - this place is the real deal and has a friendly staff, reasonable prices and a customer service attitude that can't be beat! Start your meal with chips, salsa and guacamole. You get fresh from the fryer chips, just made guac and terrific salsa. Be aware that when the proprietor's say spicy, they mean spicy - this is VERY true with the devil fish - tasty but searing. We have tasted just about everything on the menu and have never been disappointed. If you don't see what you want or are unsure, ask the owner, "What should I have tonite?" the answer will be a series of questions including: do you like spicy? are you very hungry? do you want meat or fish? and then a statement, "I have just what you want." And it will be just what you wanted. Be aware, be hungry because the plate that will be presented will be full, appetizing and filling. Oh, and say hola for me when you go.

We were passing through Kennett Square and had read reviews about La Pena, but we hesitated when we saw how small this restaurant looked from the outside. I'm very glad that we went in, however, as it turned out to be a great meal at a reasonable price. There are maybe ten tables inside, but everything is freshly prepared and the service could not have been any better. For those who are used to chain restaurants, think Qdoba but better. We will definitely go back when the opportunity arises.

Food was fresh, hot, tasty and reflected what all the previous reviews claimed. This was the real deal, Mexican food at its very best. But, if you are looking for atmosphere, you'll be disappointed. The chips were freshly made and cooked. The variety of salsa's good (most were 3 alarm or higher). We would go back in a minute.

We read reviews on this restrauant and decided try it for dinner. The building on the outside isn't much to look at, on the inside we were not sure if this was a to-go order only place, but we were told to sit anywhere. We order chips, salsa and guacamole. The chip were fresh out of the fryer, the salsa and guacamole was fresh made and outstanding. We both ordered Chimichangas (one steak and one spiced pork). They were both out of this world! Do your palate a favor and dine at La Pena!
