Owner description: In 1906, industrialist Pierre du Pont (1870-1954) purchased a small farm near Kennett Square, PA, to save a collection of historic trees from being sold for lumber. Today, Longwood Gardens is one of the world’s great horticultural displays, encompassing 1,077 acres of dazzling gardens, woodlands, meadows, fountains, 10,010-pipe Aeolian organ and 4.5-acre conservatory. Longwood continues the mission set forth by Mr. du Pont to inspire people through excellence in garden design, horticulture, education and the performing arts, through programming that includes exhibitions, musical performances by leading artists, renowned horticulture education programs, horticulture research, environmental stewardship and community engagement.

In my fairly broad experience, Longwood is one of the must see gardens in the world. it has everything from the magnificent perfection of its conservatory to the charm of the long borders and the working greenhouses. the water gardens are amazing, the topiary garden lots of fun the fountains a fun feature. don't miss the green walls and 4-star toilets near the conservatory!

they even catered for the elderly with electric buggies and wheelchairs (take note Chanticleer). I took my new born baby here in 1982 for her first outing, happy to bring my 96 year old mum in 2014.

this was an amazing 4 hours spent touring the gardens and the conservatory. outstanding displays of perennials, vegetables, herbs, and annual beds. the conservatory is like NONE other. it is very well cared for and houses amazing rooms of plants.

I mark my calendar every year for each of the fireworks events at Longwood. However, I was quite disappointed in the display held for the 4th of July after having one of the best performances over Memorial Day. The show started out great but seemed to "fizzle" out as the half hour slowly came to an end with NO Grand Finale to speak of. Hopefully, we will see an improvement for the remaining 4 events.

Longwood gardens is a very nice place to relax and unwind. The highlights of our visit were the water lily park, the conservatory and the rose arch just right of the main entrance. We went in mid june and the rose gardens were not in full bloom. I suppose if we had visited a little earlier the rose garden would have been a sight to see. I felt that the water fountain show was a bit overblown. The night show might be a lot better than the one that we saw at 2.00 pm.
There are plenty of pathways surrounded by lush greenery and walking along them was extremely relaxing. We are planning on visiting again in the fall just to walk along these paths with the leaves changing color.
The tickets are priced at $18 an adult, but if you are a student with a valid ID, you get inside for $8.

Another DuPont family garden that is exquisite. The conservatory is filled with an enormous collection. Rooms with sweet smelling roses to cactus to ferns to hybrids. The fountain gardens will amaze you. There are also weekly concerts for a fee.
