Owner description: In 1906, industrialist Pierre du Pont (1870-1954) purchased a small farm near Kennett Square, PA, to save a collection of historic trees from being sold for lumber. Today, Longwood Gardens is one of the world’s great horticultural displays, encompassing 1,077 acres of dazzling gardens, woodlands, meadows, fountains, 10,010-pipe Aeolian organ and 4.5-acre conservatory. Longwood continues the mission set forth by Mr. du Pont to inspire people through excellence in garden design, horticulture, education and the performing arts, through programming that includes exhibitions, musical performances by leading artists, renowned horticulture education programs, horticulture research, environmental stewardship and community engagement.

The Longwood Gardens are such an excellent idea for a day trip. So much to see with such little time. Great stroll through the grounds and at night there is a water fountain show! Beautiful day to enjoy with the family.

There was nothing blooming outside when we were there due to the long winter but when we stepped into the conservatory WOW!!! Overwhelmed by the greenery, colors and heavenly scents. This and Winterthur are a MUST if in the area.

“Too Many Flowers Not Enough Time”
Reviewed April 13, 2014

Did a small tour before seeing the rest of the grounds. The tour explained the "Champion" trees which are old forest. The docent walked us through several meadows and gardens and although nothing outside was in bloom, the landscape architecture was interesting.

Entering the Conservatory the initial reaction was the fragrance from the lilies and the warm, moist air. There was a riot of color and soothing water features. Don't miss the wall of ferns. The property is a photographers dream and even the gift shop was special with seeds, plants, books, toys and beautiful art glass.

“Buy the membership and enjoy year round”
Reviewed April 5, 2014

Longwood gardens is about 45 minutes from home and well worth the family membership. My two girls age 9 and 6 love it. They have been 2 times so far and want to go back for more. At this time of year the outdoor gardens are not blooming but the conservancy and the dupont house are wonderful. Kids get to do scavenger hunts on the grounds, in the conservancy children's area and in the house. The tree houses are fun as well. Listening to the 10001 pipe organ in the conservancy is quite a treat. There is lots of walking so wear good shoes. Kids get tired out and nap on way home. Good fun all around in a beautiful environment.
