Owner description: In 1906, industrialist Pierre du Pont (1870-1954) purchased a small farm near Kennett Square, PA, to save a collection of historic trees from being sold for lumber. Today, Longwood Gardens is one of the world’s great horticultural displays, encompassing 1,077 acres of dazzling gardens, woodlands, meadows, fountains, 10,010-pipe Aeolian organ and 4.5-acre conservatory. Longwood continues the mission set forth by Mr. du Pont to inspire people through excellence in garden design, horticulture, education and the performing arts, through programming that includes exhibitions, musical performances by leading artists, renowned horticulture education programs, horticulture research, environmental stewardship and community engagement.

Thank you Pierre DuPont for having such a wonderful vision for creating such spectacular gardens and then having the generosity and foresight to insure that the masterpiece be preserved for millions to enjoy. (Take time time to explore his home on the grounds to learn about this fascinating gentleman.)

The grounds are beautifully maintained and expansive. The main conservatory is a feast for the imagination! It was delightful to watch so many visitors looking around in gentle amazement. Many of the guests take photographs, but it is a polite and friendly crowd.

Our teenage daughter had the best time of us all. She spent the day looking for places that Elizabeth Bennett (Pride and Prejudice) or Mary Lennox (The Secret Garden) might hide or stop to read a book. She also imagined places for Rapunzel would live (the bell tower) or Cinderella would run down the steps and lose her glass slipper. We imagined where Arielle from the Little Mermaid would pop out from the water or Snow White would hide from the evil queen. Throughout the entire time we took pictures and laughed. These will make for wonderful family memories.

You will not find many gardens to rival these on the East coast. The best part is that the creator, Pierre DuPont, designed these gardens to be enjoyed, especially by young. Bring your imagination and tap into the magic!

A visit to a garden in March? When it's to Longwood Gardens, it's a slam-dunk. Although the grounds are still mostly wearing their winter drab, there are a few peeks of crocus, daffodil, and other early bloomers to welcome you to the entrance.
The Garden Store has a plethora of gifts, including potted plants / flowers and all the necessities to help them thrive.
The centerpiece of the visit is the conservatory, which is bursting with color and fragrance and shapes and textures. The orchid display was breath-taking in its variety and presentation.
A side-trip into the music parlor is a must-do for any music lover. The behind the scenes look at the organ pipes is a fun and rare opportunity to see the "guts" of the landmark instrument.
Although we had no children, we popped in to the children's area to enjoy the water play and the fun that young families were having.
Talking to the staff / volunteers is another terrific opportunity to understand the history and philanthropy surrounding Longwood Gardens. They were totally engaged and informative.
My only negative has nothing to do with the attraction but with my GPS function, which took us over the river and through the woods on very back roads...be sure to have directions to the Gardens, which will ensure an easy entrance to a wonderful day at the Gardens.

Longwood is beautiful anytime of the year but during the Christmas Holidays it is at its best, really gets the holiday spirit moving. The outdoor light display will tickle the fancy of all age groups, but the poinsettias are what I enjoy the most. Breathtaking!

There is a lot to see here. Beautiful displays of flowers. It is very busy on week-ends. Better to go during the week. The summer is very hot. The orchid display finishes today (March 24th.).
