We have been visiting nearby Longwood Gardens in December for the past 4 years to enjoy the spectacular decorations and to get in the Christmas mood. We had eaten at another restaurant over on Rt. 52 last year when we were unable to get a table for fine dining at Longwood Gardens in the early evening . .and so we "poked" around on TripAdvisor this past Monday to find a better alternative. Boy are we glad we found Portabello as their recent reviews indicated that the new chef/owners were first rate . . . they greeted us after being seated to discuss the menu and made some great recommendations . . and we started down our culinary experience with a bias on trying all things with mushrooms given that this area of SE Pennsylvania is known as "the mushroom capital of the US". My wife and another friend had the mushroom soup and I had the Portabello Fries . . lovely slices of Portabello mushrooms dipped in egg batter and rolled in panko bread crumbs, deep fried and then served with a delicate salad and tasty dipping sauce. I ordered the Veal Marsala with pasta along with steamed vegetables . . the Marsala sauce was on the spicy side and distinctive . . and the veal and pasta were topped with mushrooms! My wife ordered the Lobster ravioli and our friend ordered two other dishes. We finished off with freshly brewed coffee and a very unique rolled cheese cake dessert. Everything was prepared correctly and the ingredients and presentation first class. We had noticed BYOB on another posting . . so we brought two bottles of Italian wine with us . . and no hassle or "corkage fee" was added to the bill. We were all extremely pleased with the food, service and attention . . a wonderful dining experience and the bill came in at about $34 per person plus tip. This is a great value for excellent food in a charming dining room with attentive service . . we will likely be back every December when visiting Longwood Gardens.
