“A Wonderful Find in Mushroom Country”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 8, 2011

We have been visiting nearby Longwood Gardens in December for the past 4 years to enjoy the spectacular decorations and to get in the Christmas mood. We had eaten at another restaurant over on Rt. 52 last year when we were unable to get a table for fine dining at Longwood Gardens in the early evening . .and so we "poked" around on TripAdvisor this past Monday to find a better alternative. Boy are we glad we found Portabello as their recent reviews indicated that the new chef/owners were first rate . . . they greeted us after being seated to discuss the menu and made some great recommendations . . and we started down our culinary experience with a bias on trying all things with mushrooms given that this area of SE Pennsylvania is known as "the mushroom capital of the US". My wife and another friend had the mushroom soup and I had the Portabello Fries . . lovely slices of Portabello mushrooms dipped in egg batter and rolled in panko bread crumbs, deep fried and then served with a delicate salad and tasty dipping sauce. I ordered the Veal Marsala with pasta along with steamed vegetables . . the Marsala sauce was on the spicy side and distinctive . . and the veal and pasta were topped with mushrooms! My wife ordered the Lobster ravioli and our friend ordered two other dishes. We finished off with freshly brewed coffee and a very unique rolled cheese cake dessert. Everything was prepared correctly and the ingredients and presentation first class. We had noticed BYOB on another posting . . so we brought two bottles of Italian wine with us . . and no hassle or "corkage fee" was added to the bill. We were all extremely pleased with the food, service and attention . . a wonderful dining experience and the bill came in at about $34 per person plus tip. This is a great value for excellent food in a charming dining room with attentive service . . we will likely be back every December when visiting Longwood Gardens.

“Coming into their own...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2011

The restaurant is under new management as of October 2011. Theft are moving away from the heavy Italian cuisine and towards more of an American Bistro. The menu still focuses on the mushrooms that the area is famous for but the chef is bringing forward new dishes for the lighter style. The wait staff and owner were very attentive and helpful. This is a BYOB restaurant.

“Spectacular dining experience @ Portabello's in Kennett Square, under new ownership by Head Chef Brett”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2011

We had the best meal @ Portabello's with a surprise visit to our table from the new owner / head chef, to chat & pore us all more wine. Great location, 115 State St. smack in the middle of Historic Kennett Square fun, with a wine store directly across the street for convenient BYO. My favorite dish was Wild Mushroom Lasgna, with delicate layers of local mushrooms, velvety made pasta, and finished with a smooth cream sauce. Oh my...IT WAS TOO DIE FOR !! We shared various appetizers, salads, entrees, and desserts...all with great flare and interesting, great tastes. The pasta melts in your mouth @ Portabello's...un - like previous owners. Previous owners pasta was dry and bland. Portabello's is a for sure big A + with us... we will be back again and again. Great charming atmosphere too...definately check out the new Portabello's out, fun will be had by all

“Not worth it”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2011

We stopped in for lunch during a visit to the area. There were to other tables with guests. It was not busy. We both order hamburgers. The burgers were cooked as we had specified. However, my burger, didn't have 3 of the 6 toppings on it that were listed on the menu description. We had to ask for straws which didn't arrive promptly. We also had to request refills of water.

Overall, the service was poor. The food was edible but disappointing. The price would have been good if I had received what I had ordered.
