My fiance and I decided to walk the trails and go to the River of Rocks. There weren't as many hawks as I had anticipated seeing, as we were told September was a popular month for bird watching. Alas, it still provided great views from the mountain.

Phenomenal views of the mountains and valleys. The walk/hike is through mostly shaded, wooded areas. Great hiking adventure. There are several walking/hiking trail options, making it a great place for novice and experienced hikers. You can climb the river rocks or stay on the main path (although some rocky areas). We had a great day. I've been several times throughout the years and enjoy the various seasons' views. Hawk Mtn. is a wonderful treasure.

What beautiful views you will see! There are many different levels/look outs for all...young to old. Plus, some more challenging hikes, for the more experienced. We love coming here for the day. Great guides, great views and we have always seen hawks. They fly right above you and are so gorgeous! They charge a small fee, but have a very nice visitor’s center and plenty of parking. They also hold special events, which is a fun way for the kids to learn about nature and the hawks.

We did indeed see hawks surfing on the up winds. Very quiet place. The gift shop on the property was good. There are trails to walk but if you are an experienced hiker, for hiking alone perhaps another park or a section of the Appalachian Trail is better. I am not sure though about the size of the trail system as I could not experience the place fully due to a shortage of time and a grandmother with a walker. Better call the gift shop and ask about the trail system. The grandmother could not access the main trail with her walker but the gift shop has all-terrain wheel chairs for free that I pushed her up the slope in. She was thrilled.
