As with any paid tour, the tour guide and group size are important. The guide was very young and inexperienced. The group size was far too big. The jail itself was interesting.

Those who seek to get a piece of mining or Irish history will be disappointed by the tour and actual Old Jail Museum building. There is a great deal of water damage and the building is in poor shape. The building STINKS of mold and mildew. We spent under 30 minutes there (including waiting in the "waiting room") and by the time we left, my throat was all scratchy.

There is not much to see at this venue. They have very few artifacts. There is virtually no furniture in the wardens' quarters and the female mannequins with striped shirts posed in the cells as inmates should have kept their day jobs modeling for Old Navy catalogs. It just seemed to make a joke out of the former inmates. That really sours the reason a place like this should be kept open and running.

They over pack their tours such that the entire group can't be in the small rooms to hear the guide. Our guide didn't even know where the term "Molly Maguires" originated from which one would assume is the first thing he should have researched prior to applying for a job at a jail famous for the hanging of leading members of the Molly Maguires. There is plenty of text on the walls of the main cell block area that explains some history and if the guide had bothered to read any of it, he might have learned what the museum reports as the origin of the term.

Their biggest claim to fame is a dirty hand print on the wall in cell #17 which they permit you to view through the bars of the closed door. It's visible from the door.

I normally support small town operations but the staff was in such a rush to pack the tours and push us out that I strongly suggest they renovate their attitudes along with the building.

Inspired me to rent "Molly Maguires" movie, tells of how horrible Asa Packer & Pinkertons were. VERY educational, w/ a non-scary spiritual phenomenon. Learn from here, apply to TODAY !!!

This is an interesting tour. You'll learn about how prisons are designed as well as the Molly McGuires. If you're interested in old prisons or local mining history it's a great spot to stop.
