This is a nice, short trip that gives you a chance to get away from the Jim Thorpe crowds and sit down for an hour. Much of the scenery is obscured by trees but it is still a pleasant trip. A word of caution. If you are not there at least a half hour before the trip, do not purchase the 1st class section. There are a limited number of seats in the back (livingroom) and once those are full you end up in rather uncomfortable diningroom chairs. Also, you must walk over several others to get to the viewing platform (while the train is moving). Better off to settle for the standard seats that are more comfortable, less crowded and half the price. Also, sit on the right side of the train. That is where all the views are.

We took this one hour, open air train ride on the first day of June, a gorgeous day in Jim Thorpe. Our attentdant was David, who looked every inch the train conductor and was very helpful to us, chatting with us and giving us a couple of area maps. The train ride itself was nice, not thrilling, but fun. It slowly chugs over its tracks past the river and to a point where it stops, the engine uncouples, then backs up and recouples onto the rear of the train to pull it back. The little ones onboard that day were really enjoying the ride, shouting "Yay" and "awsome!" I couldn't hear anything that the tour guide was saying over our speaker so I just focused on taking pictures and the scenery. It must be really nice in the fall with the foliage.

Train trips tend to be quite similar, I mean you're in a box going down rails. But this trip's narrator was always pointing out places and events that helped place uniqueness on this right of way located in a history-rich place, where state of the art engineering (before trains with engines) took coal to markets and heated homes and produced goods for America's early industries.

My sweetheart had never been on a train so we got first class tickets on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway and sat on the porch on the end of the victorian era coach. Memorial Day was perfect weather for this trip and the scenery was beautiful. Sitting at the back on the porch was a unique way to ride a train and I highly recommend if you spring for 1st class, be the first to board so you can get 1 of 4 porch seats.

This was a beautiful fall in Jim Thorpe and that is when the train ride is best. I have been there in the spring too but fall is the gold winner. The leaves and the river with the mountains surrounding you are just breath taking. Grab a ride for a few dollars and listen to the clickety clack of the train while staring at some of Pa's most beautiful scenery.
