“Serene B&B and Cottage”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2012

We jagged this as a last minute night away and were so pleased with our choice. Mulla Villa guest house is a beautiful, charming house built in the 1820's by convicts for the Magistrate of the day and has been meticulously restored and looked after. We stayed in the cottage and arrived on the coldest day of spring in forever! We were soooo grateful that Caroline (our welcoming host) had the log fire roaring and waiting for us. The house itself is beautifully furnished and in keeping with the old world theme but with 'mod-cons'. The cottage, which is 50 metres up the back, is a converted woolshed and very quaint. Low ceilings, old school style and eclectic furnishings, large, deep spa bath, good quality bedding and towels, clean and neat. There's a main bedroom and a lovely big 'Granma's feather bed' in the lounge room which we ended up in so we could really enjoy the fire(which stayed lit all night!). We enjoyed the most generous breakfast we've ever been offered (cereals, fruit, yoghurt, toast ,homemade jams, eggs, bacon, mushrooms, coffee, juice!) which was mostly local and organic.
After breakfast we had a small tour of the cellars underneathj the house that once housed some convicts and then wandered up the back, hilly paddock to mingle with the cows and the view. All up, Mulla Villa is a beautiful choice to stay in the Hunter Valley and we highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience great hospitality with old world charm. We'll be back!

This is such a wonderful place. A real secluded gem. Upon arrival I was greeted by the wonderful hostess Caroline along with her gorgeous little dogs molly & sunshine which really put a smile on my face first up. Then when I entered the little cottage warmed by the lit log fire my smile got much bigger. Then once I finish the wonderful 3 course country meal my smile was resembling the look of a sliced watermelon! And kicking back in the spa just topped it off :)
The food was very fresh, most produce was their own or local. At night its amazingly quiet, great break from city noise. The mist filled valley with cattle lowing in the distance made it a picturesque start to the morning, only bettered by the big breakfast I was served at the main house! The main building is truly a heritage keepsake, nestled on the side of the valley hill will large moss covered boulders, overlooking the valley. Rooms are pristinely presented and very well maintained.
Here the staff are very friendly and you are very well looked after, you feel like your are treated as a close friend or one of the family. Overall a very comfortable and relaxing country atmosphere at a very reasonable price.
Highly recommended as a stop over from a long motorbike ride - a was my case!

This property is a wonderful opportunity to show off Australia's convict history, while enjoying comfortable rooms and a lovely breakfast.
We took our American friends here on the way back from a trip to the Hunter Valley and everyone enjoyed the experience. Beds were good, linens also and the breakfast was terrific - all home grown, home made or home laid - and plenty of it!!
The rooms are quite spacious; mostly with ensuites or a dedicated bathroom and the guest lounge great. Don't expect modern/minimalist - it's very old, very quaint and dripping in character - one almost expects to see ghosts in the hallways!!
The convict jail cells under the house are interesting and easily accessable.
We have stayed here once before (some years ago) and would happily stay again.

We had driven past Mulla Villa guesthouse on many occasions when we took the back road to the Hunter Valley. So we waited until my Dad & stepmum were on holidays from Ireland to finally stay there.
We rented the 2 bedroom cottage just meters up the hill from the main house, so we could all be together. It is a little bit daggy BUT in all the best ways, so we felt like we were staying in a good friend's holiday home rather than paying in a holiday home for the weekend. The whole charm of the cottage is because it has not been renovated in years.
The setting of the cottage is just perfect, we wound our way through an overgrown cottage garden to a large wide verandah with various seating options - which is just the way the garden & verandah should have looked.
The breakfast in the main house the following morning filled us for the day & there were fruit & cereal choices, along with a fully cooked brekkie.
Our only gripe was that the second bedroom in the cottage is actually in half the livingroom, so there was a little lack of privacy when the folks went to the kitchen a few times throughout the night! A good screen should suffice!
A good tip is to sit outside when its dark & look at the stars ...something us Sydney dwellers don't often get to enjoy!
All in all we REALLY enjoyed our stay & will be back!

We spent a night in the cottage and had dinner and breakfast in the guesthouse. It was built around 170 years ago and you can't expect it to be at the same time historic and "modern". The building includes two cells on the lower level where convicts were kept in dark, cramped and what must have been in winter horribly cold conditions. Leg irons and a ball and chain can be found in these cells. We has 2 most wonderful meals there (with the dinner washed down by our own wine). Caroline the owner is a delight and a great cook. If you have a sense for history and enjoy conversation and would like to experience in a small way what life was like in the Australia of the past in a most beautiful valley you will enjoy your stay.

Room Tip: the cottage has more space and if you want to cook facilities but that means missing out on the deli...

For $650 for two nights, we expected a little better than a basic room, not serviced at all, host was never around to provide service, we had no idea what was happening with meals, and way over priced meals for kids. Very disappointed over all with this place. The shared common areas needed a good clean and it looks like the place has been let go. The host seemed too busy to focus on this business and the customers.
