White Cliffs Underground Motel

As with others who have reviewed this underground motel, we had never stayed underground and were excited to do so. We booked two nights on-line and had excellent service from the staff throughout the booking. We arrived in White Cliffs and hoped that it would meet our expectations. We had a lovely cool room with a comfortable bed and attractive rustic furniture. It was so dark and quiet at night that we slept in until 8am easily. We were a little surprised to have to walk down the hall to the toilets and showers, but after exploring the complex, could see why it would be too difficult to have bathrooms in every room. The hallways were painted rock with several areas showing the natural buff and red colors -- very attractive. There is a great viewpoint up 44 stairs, and we watched the sunset one night, and a wonderful dust and lightning storm the next -- amazing photos from there. The historical center was very interesting and there is something to see. One of the best parts of our stay was meeting interesting people at meals -- and of course the meals themselves were very good too. (We would have liked more choice perhaps in the meals however as the same three choices were offered each day.) All in all, we enjoyed our stay there and would recommend it to anyone who would enjoy a unique experience in the outback. And of course, we enjoyed touring the local sights like the opal shops and diggings, although it didn't take too long to do that. The local roads are rough but it is the Outback!! We enjoyed the above gorund pool each afternoon -- a great way to cool off.

Having never stayed underground, I was keen to stay in this motel. It was cool and pleasant. The staff were friendly and the general atmosphere was comfortable. It is usual that motel rooms have their own en-suites but this was not the case here - when you see the place, you can appreciate the difficulties there would be in installing plumbing to each room. The shared bathroom facilities were clean, functional and sufficiently private. I am also used to using my mobile phone and re-charging it in the motel at night. Of course there is no reception underground and there is only one power-point in each room so that one needs to disconnect the bedside light or bring a double adaptor. (And if you're on any network other than Telstra, your phone won't work anyway). White Cliffs is a very unusual little town and there is not a lot to do unless one wants to buy opals, but the locals are friendly. A visit is worthwhile and a stay in the Underground Motel is a great part of the experience. I wouldn't stay for a week but it is well worth a one night detour from the Barrier Highway if travelling between Sydney and Broken Hill. I'm told it gets very hot in summer so you may wish not to visit then .... but, if you do, you'll really appreciate how cool underground living can be.

We just recently stayed in the Underground Motel in Coober Pedy and it was really good. From the moment we arrived we felt welcome by the lovely receptionist Merce. The Motel was exceptionally clean and comfortable so much so that my husband and I slept in till 11am which we never do. It was a great experience that you don't get in most parts of Australia so take the opportunity to sleep underground in a really nice CLEAN motel with lovely staff : )

Why would you stay here except for novelty value? Once the novelty wears off it is boring and expensive. The motel will take your money easily. There is nothing there to see or do and it is kilometres from anywhere. The street it is on is so rough it will break your family car. The rear showers and toilet are terrible and old. The rooms have nothing in them (look at the photos they put up).

Room Tip: Don't stay

After our recent two-week outback NSW / country Vic adventure, I asked our kids (14yo and 11yo) what the highlights were. The first nominated highlight then, and subsequently to friends and family, was the Underground Motel.

As you'd expect, the best thing about the Motel is the carved out rooms and corridors which are cool and quiet. It is a unique experience. In our stay, we chose two interconnecting rooms. This was a good arrangement that led to an excellent night's sleep for all. Having said that there are some really nice other things:
* The dinner was good value and enjoyed by all (I particularly liked the curry).
* The staff were really friendly and helpful, and were able to make quite decent cups of coffee (not to be taken for granted in this part of the world).
* The view from the top of the hotel at sunset.

Of course, there are some downsides. The reality is that the room fitouts are pretty tired and worn, you need to go down the corridor to the showers/toilet (these are clean but also showing their age), and the pool is not heated. But really, if you are in this part of the world you must detour to White Cliffs and when you do, stay here. It is really good fun.

This was such a fun place to stay! I was a little apprehensive as I get claustrophobic but I didn't feel it at all. Everywhere is light and airy, Dan the owner was helpful and friendly, great food and plenty of it, clean bathroom facilities and an awesome historical museum at the back of the restaurant. The children loved being underground and we all slept very well! We stayed 1 night, wish we'd booked 2, White Cliffs has lots to see and do.

Room Tip: We stayed in the family room. Plenty of room and an easy walk to the bathroom facilities and outside...
