The Denman Hotel Thredbo
Ranked #4 of 5 Hotels in Thredbo Village
Reviewed July 23, 2012

I made several mistakes this ski season. One was to book late. The other was to not look at Trip Adviser (as that would have meant I would have avoided the third mistake). Third, I booked a "family" room at the Denman. It was clealry designed as a one-bedroom arrangement with a small living area. They have converted it to a "family" size by simply cramming in 3 single beds into the already small living area. There were 2 chairs in the entire place for 5 of us! Note: this place cost us approximately $1,000 per night.
One of the family was not skiing so she basically had to lie on a bed (or go into the lobby area) to read a book. It was so dispiriting to have to come back to the room each day. Oh, hot water also ran out (lovely when in the snow) and the cleaners skipped our room one day.
Look, the front desk area, restuarant and bar are all fine but the rooms are too small and neglected. They need to upgrade the rooms. Spend some money! They need to be realistic about their rates.
This was a truly budget accomodation experience (for which I happen to have paid a lot of money).

The experience is one I will try to forget and I suggest you do not book a room at this place. The rooms are horribly small and they find it acceptable to cram a family into two tiny rooms with one bathroom that is only accessible through the main bedroom (two bedrooms actually means one bedroom and what should be a living room crammed with the kids beds). Cleaning is hopeless, breakfast was disappointing (toast took ages as toaster kept short circuiting and coffee was bad), service was awful and generally a truly horrible experience. Might work for some people if you paid the correct rate but paying a premium for this is a joke.

We booked the Denman for a weekend of skiing without the kids on the false assumption that it was a boutique hotel with luxury appointments. Given the cost of over $600/night for a double room, we expected quality. We did not get it.

The Denman is a 3 Star Property!

Granted it has a very nice restaurant with good food and wine. Granted a cooked breakfast was included and it was adequate. But only adequate. Granted it looks nice from the road and is bang in the heart of the village.

But. Unfortunately the rooms are crud. They're dirty, they smell (the smell of must and damp is overwhelming on entry), there are holes in the fittings, the walls are cracked and peeling, and the rooms are very small.

The Denman wants to be a 4/5 star, 'boutique' property. It advertises as such, and charges as such. But it's a 3 Star Property and nothing more.

Regrettably, it goes on the 'Never Again' list.

I organised a wedding with Ed and Judy from the Denman and found them to be, not only, the perfect hosts, but the leaders of a team that delivered us a wedding that will never be forgotten. Many thanks to their restaurant Manager Sarah; I'm a hard task master, but she delivered with poise and polish and delivered a unique event that, I'm sure, the Bride and Groom will never forget. Many thanks to both Ed & Judy and also Sarah.

We had many negative thoughts about this hotel at first, but the good parts are particularly exceptional!

The bads: Upon arrival, we really struggled finding parking. There is no allocated parking close to the hotel, except to unload luggage. Staff were very friendly but the owners were cold and very brash - not pleasant. Our room was on the first floor. There are no elevators, just a very skinny stair case with no one offering us assistance with our luggage and we really struggled!

We booked a King Room with mountain view room for $360 per night, expecting a great room and amazing views. The views were of the mountain, but we were looking over an unimpressive roof and walls of other buildings. The room was VERY disappointing - Very dated & very small with no where for us to put our luggage. We spent the entire time stepping over luggage and each other. The bathroom could hardly accommodate the two of us. The shower temp was either scalding hot or unbearably cold, but great pressure. Our biggest dislike at any hotel is two twin beds pushed together and it magically becomes a 'king' bed. Unfortunately this is the case with all the king rooms here.

The restaurant and bar were spectacular.  Delicious food and very knowledgable staff who were able to recommend various yummy beverages and suitable wines with our dinner and dessert. The 'gourmet' breakfast is a pathetic continental breakfast.

I would not recommend this to anyone. Stay in Jindabyne in a cheap 2 star hotel and commute to the slopes - that would actually be better than this!!! Be sure to hire your equipment in Cooma or Jindabyne as there is at least a 200% mark up on all equipment in Thredbo.

Our daughter was married in Thredbo in April 2012. The Reception was held at The Denman Hotel which catered for 82 guests, many of whom also stayed at the hotel. We commenced with pre-dinner drinks at the Apres Bar before moving upstairs to the Reception Room. The setting was beautiful, looking out over the mountains, candlelit mirrored tables and everyone close enough to chat with no crowding.

The food was exceptional (entrees, mains and desserts), the service highly professional and very friendly - the staff even taking time to take photographs of guests! The meals were delivered so that everyone was eating together and any request was happily accommodated.

Post-reception drinks were again held at the Apres Bar until the early hours with full bar staff and no closing time.

Ed and Judy, the owners, were just fabulous. As wedding specialists they assisted us with advice and options prior to the wedding (as we are not wedding specialists!), warmly greeted our guests as they checked in, responded promptly to any last minute requests, picked guests up from the communal car park to return them to the hotel and made available space to store our bits and pieces both before and after the reception until we could retrieve them the next day and made areas available within for photographs (it was raining lightly) of the bride and groom and their attendants. Nothing was too much trouble.

We didn't stay at The Denman as we needed a lot of space both for the bride to dress and for her attendants to stay with her so we stayed in a house. However the guests who did stay didn't have any issues with the accommodation over the three days many stayed.

The weather was great. We were able to wear short sleeved shirts during the day and only needed to don jumpers in the evening.

All in all we had a great week-end. The Denman, the Alpine Hotel, the managers at the Alpenhorn/Squatters Run and the people of Thredbo made it a fabulous time with family and friends.

Highly recommend The Denman for any special function, and Thredbo overall.

Thank you so much, Ed and Judy, for helping to create such happy memories for us all!

So, I read the mixed reviews here and was dreading the experience of the Denman. We arrived 15 mins before check-in opened and that was no trouble. We had an issue with our credit card (quickly resolved) and that was dealt with good naturedly. It turns out we were welcomed by Judy (who has taken a few critical comments here). She was perfectly pleasant at all times, passed friendly comments with our kids. You can't park nearby (but can drop bags off), which is a slight drawback but Judy had me follow her to the car park and gave me a lift back.

So far, so good. We had a family room on the ground floor, room 303 - no stairs. And no view really, but that was fine with us. The room had a queen and 2 single beds, each about a metre apart. A very big wardrobe, large chest of drawers, table, 4 chairs, fridge. Plenty of room for luggage but all quite snug. So yes, the room wasn't massive but it was plenty big enough and clean, and toiletries were provided.

We ate in the restaurant. The two waiters were lovely guys. Food was great, service a tad on the slow side but kids were served quickly.

Really nice and quiet during the night.

Breakfast was fine, plenty of it.

Drawbacks? When we arrived the room was really cold. We had to put the heater on full blast but it did warm up eventually and we were cosy through the night.

They could do with another toaster at breakfast time as the queues were quite large. It could be bad if it was really busy.

Hey we paid $260 for the room and it was well worth it.
