“Good skiing - for Australia”

Thredbo Alpine Village
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 21, 2014

Thredbo is a great place for me as I am a member of a ski lodge there and I live only 2 hr's drive away. So its quite economical for me. But a trip to Thredbo for a family staying in commercial accommodation is quite expensive. Skiing at Thredbo can be very good, especially when there is fresh snow. Weekends can be very busy and are best avoided. A trip to Thredbo outside of the ski season can be very enjoyable for those who like walking in the mountains. There is a 9 hole golf course, a fitness centre as well as a village with a good range of shops and restaurants.

Went skiing last month here for 3 days and the whole place is pretty incredible. We stayed about 30km away in the town of Jindabyne. Well worth taking a look and walking round the lake. We drove up from Melbourne and the whole drive over the mountains before you get to Thredbo is beautiful. We purchased our 3 day ski pass for $335 and additional hire of skis and equipment cost an extra $100. There were a wide selection of runs that would suit beginners through to advanced skiers. All the lift attendants were pleasant and all engaged in conversations or said hello and asked how your day was going. There's a good few places down at the bottom to grab some food and at the Friday Flats there is a large bar/dining area that is pretty cheap for a ski resort. It's the only place to grab a beer at the bottom coming straight off the slopes unless you wish to walk. They also run buses in between the slopes that are free so you can get back to the main car park. Parking is $27 a day but you're in a national park so the money is going to a good cause. I'm glad I went skiing in Australia and I'd recommend it to anyone else.

Have just finished 3 days skiing week beginning 11th August. Over the last decade I would have skied here on about 15 days on about 5 occasions and these 3 days were without doubt the best conditions experienced. Fresh 10cm of snow for my day 1 and zero temperatures through the day and each night meant the snow surface held its condition and snowmaking added the cream. By Wednesday afternoon though a number of slopes had the top layer carved away and many icy patches developing. Would suggest need at least 5cm of fresh to fall or may see more ice patches developing. Thick base on all runs. Road in from Jindabyne in top condition and cleared all the way to village carpark and surrounds. Facilities are great with plenty of places for food and refreshments. No lift lines to worry about mid week. Best for intermediate and advanced but Friday Flat seems to be liked by beginners.

Thredbo is great for families but the skiing is a little more for the intermediate. The road in there is great and chains are required for all vehicles except 4WD's
The village is quaint, with a little bit of shopping and restaurants.....perhaps not for those on a budget. :)
