Melaleuca Surfside Backpackers
Reviewed December 2, 2008

I arrived at Melaleuca expecting to stay a few days... then I met the crew at this beautifully located backpackers. It was like having a family away from home! They are the warmest, friendliest, most welcoming people I have ever met. Not to mention the excellent facilities that blend in perfectly with the surroundings, the Kangaroo (Josie) and the koalas, the beautiful beach, the great surf, superb fishing and sandboarding. ....I ended up staying over a month!!! I will definitely be going back!!!

As a Canadian I would like to say I'm used to friendly people, but the Melaleuca Staff are the friendliest bunch I've come across in any of my travels. Clean facilities, great location (right across from the beach), loads of activities offered and a real genuine personal touch. I got to see 2 koalas while I was staying there, which is more than I saw the rest of my trip in Australia. Spend a few nights here for sure and you will find a real hidden gem, hell, stay a week or longer, I did!!

This is a great place to go to get away from the city or start your trip up the coast, like I did. There was a very relaxed atmosphere here, you felt like you were in the middle of nowhere and the owners are really nice people to. Good for surfing and hiking, Port Stephens is a really cool area, defiantly worth a stop off for a few days.
