We went on a recent trip to nelson's bay, and this place is fantastic. Every single course we had was wonderful and the amount was plenty. Most people like to over eat, that's not what you do here. Three courses and your very full. The service was awesome, as soon as our wine or water got down low they where straight there to fill it up. We each had three courses, a side dish, bottle of wine and a beer and only cost $180 dollars. So overall I think it's a must visit when you are in the area, we will be back everytime we come here on holidays.

If there was any issue it was smaller size of meal but we were part of a big group and there were budgets to be met on both sides.
The group booking led understandably to a limited menu with 3 choices per course.
Bread rolls were of a good standard then licking my lips after the Tasmanian Atlantic Salmon entree and have never had better crispy skin Barramundi but the big winner on the night was the passion fruit souffle! I doubt if that dish could have been better and its why I am writing the review.
Service was friendly, keen and consistent.
When you go to a summer vacation town in the down season the expectations are mixed but whilst there were some minor gripes Zest should be applauded for the quality of food delivered.
Not able to comment re value for money as was a lucky guest to have been able to enjoy the food, wine, networking, etc.

Menu was great, food tasted delicious.
Portions were very small and we left feeling hungry (budget didn't stretch to another course)
Service was excellent.

Never go to zest if you are
1) hungry
2) used to fine dining
3) expecting a refined wait staff who know how to look after guest.
4) looking for value for money

We waited for several minutes before wait staff noticed our arrival. We were greeted by kitchen staff wearing food stained aprons. We were served wine as if attending a BBQ.
The food portions were so small we had to order bread between courses to fill up. (The butter was frozen too). The taste was no more exotic than a nights dining at Rotary club!
Upon receiving a $150.00 bill for two courses we felt unsatisfied, outraged and still (frustratingly) hungry. Our complaints were met with a glassy gaze and idiotic smile.
Zest restuarant may have followers who are taken in by tiny delights but for the rest of us who poses a unique double helix we find the whole experience insulting and pathetic.

I was taking tripadvisor reviews pretty seriously, and we couldn't get into the top-ranked ones. But then when we walked by the next day, they looked fine, but nothing special. In the same way, I don't think that Zest felt either like a hatted restaurant, nor that it should be down so far on the list. The food was tasty, the portions were fine, not too big, not too small, and a few of the dishes were memorable. It's slightly higher-end, but not like in a big city. The decor, however, could use a bit of zhushing up, the view to the bright kitchen in the back was not so elegant, and the ambience felt dated. Nice service.
