“short drive to the beach, nice & clean rooms”
Reviewed June 1, 2012

My husband and I spent 2 nights at Peninsula Motor Inn at the end of February 2012. Extremely polite, friendly and helpful staff and our room was spacious and very clean. Great location, just a short drive to the beach and main shopping area. Breakfast buffet selection however was very limited and there was bacon and baked beans but no eggs!! Would definitely go again but would not stay for breakfast.

When we arrived we were greeted with a warm welcome and found the staff to be informative and helpful. We stayed in a lovely deluxe room that was clean, pleasant and comfortable. The facilities are fair but you get what you pay for. Breakfast was fabulous.
Overall we had a great time.
Thank you, we'll be back.

Chose this hotel primarily on price and short notice availability for a two day visit to the Port Stephen's area. We arrived by bus from Sydney and were dropped off a short distance from the hotel which was very convenient. The room and facilities were fairly average but reasonable for the price. The location was great for Shoal Bay but quite far from other areas without a car.

We recently returned from a weekend stay at the Peninsular Motor Inn Nelson Bay. We were glad to have booked this on a voucher deal and would have been very disappointed if we had paid the full rate. The rooms have been nicely refreshed, and for a 3 1/2 star motel quite acceptable however the "balcony" advertised was unuseable as it was so narrow that it could only fit a small chair sidewyas, and the "outlook" was the colourbond fence 1 metre away and unit block next door. Given the motel was not at full occupancy, and that other vacant rooms had a much nicer outlook, we sensed that we were treated like the poor counsins because we had a discount voucher. This was confirmed the following morning at at the very basic breakfast (no fruit of any sort, no yoghurt - only toast, scrambled eggs and bacon). When I asked if they could provide poached eggs instead, we were grandly told that as we were voucher holders and they'd have to boil the water to poach the eggs, this was not possible. We were then advised that the cereal was out of bounds unless we paid extra - go figure, you'd think that they would prefer people to fill up on cereal, rather than bacon and eggs? Coffee - help yourself to powdered coffee satchets of a cheap brand "coffee" and boiled water! Wake up Australian hospitality industry. You wonder why people don't bother travelling in Australia and take their tourist dollars overseas - its' called value for money. With a few relatively low cost improvements this motel could be good - in its current form it is only average and I wouldn't be coming back unless it was at a heavily iscounted price.

My partner and I have just returned from a long weekend at Peninsula Motor Inn and I must admit we were pleasantly suprised. After reading the previous reviews we were a bit worried about how we would be greeted at reception. We didn't have to wait long and the man that was checking us in was really nice. He was laughing and joking with us and asked us about our drive up. Another lady that was behind the counter also started talking to us. We both walked out confused about the reviews we had read.

We stayed in a deluxe room. Our room had a Queen bed, TV, fridge, toaster, kettle etc. which was more than enough as we were only in there to sleep as most of our time was spent in the pool or at the beach. We used the restaurant for the included breakfast which was basic. Checkout was just as nice and friendly as check in. Thank you, we will be back.

I stayed here with my husband for 2 nights. Service was great, staff were very friendly. When we walked into our room there was a strange smell, bit stuffy and mouldy. However, room in general was decent.

Great location. Less than 2km to Nelson Bay shops, which is a lovely walk. It's also a short walk to little beach. The restaurant here was excellent. Great food and very well priced.

This was meant to be a special occasion for my elderly mother who is 86 years old. It was my Dad’s anniversary of when he passed and my mum wanted to make a special pilgrimage to one of their favourite places they enjoyed when my dad was still alive.
Instead of a four star deluxe room with a private balcony that I had paid for we were placed in a 2 star conjoined like cabin room. It was not part of the Peninsula Nelson bay hotel but over the road at a very busy intersection that was dangerous to cross and no pedestrian crossing.
When my mother complained to the manager Mark, she felt like he treated her like an imbecile. He seemed to shout it at her that the other rooms had stairs and he did not seem to listen to her tell him how dangerous the road was to cross when we went to the dining room for breakfast etc.
Stairs would have been preferable for my mum than this very busy intersection crossing.
(There were just as many rooms downstairs as there was upstairs).
Our 2 star budget room was next door to a group of rowdy workmen who sat outside our conjoined rooms socialising. The workmen were friendly enough, just very noisy, especially when the windows needed to be left open to eliminate the stuffy smell in the room.
The only alternative I was given by the manager (Mark) was to pay an additional $150 for an upgrade. There was no reimbursement whatsoever for the downgrade.
I have never encountered such appalling treatment and negative attitude anywhere as we received from the management at the Peninsula Nelson Bay. Manager (Mark) informed me he was acting under strict instructions from the owners – ‘a group of lawyers’. Perhaps he was trying to intimidate me with the words ‘a group of lawyers’ – he gave me their contact details – but my email was answered by Mark himself only. Funny that!
