“Definitely not "the best"”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 22, 2013

If this is the best (so they advertise) the judges didn't eat what we ate. I had fish with chilli, lime and ginger. All I could taste was sweet chilli sauce. I recreated the dish at home the way I would have expected it with fresh ingredients and it was simple and tasty. Using sweet chilli sauce was just a cheap shortcut and an unforgivable one. My husband's coconut based fish was just as disappointing and flavourless. For the price it was a rip off.

“Soooo Fresh”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2013

I had the s & p squid with chips and salad and hubby had the regular fish and chips. After sampling each others food we decided that our seafood must've come off the trawler just that morning as it tasted amazingly fresh. Loved it!

“Interesting claim to fame?”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2013 via mobile

My wife and I had a day trip to Nelson Bay and decided to have lunch here. It isn't a long walk from the main D'Albora marina but the paid parking in and around that whole area is a real dis-incentive to visitors particularly on weekends when the hourly rates almost double. Faulty ticket machines which happily gobble your coins then fail to issue a ticket also leave a sour taste in one's mouth so beware.

At Bub's, we managed to get a seat outside near the entrance and my wife checked if it was OK for our Cocker Spaniel to sit with us which it was. The prices aren't reasonable although the two serves ($39) of battered barramundi and chips was OK but certainly not "the best in NSW" as claimed on the huge sign on their building. For the prices charged a serving of tartare sauce would have been appreciated but a small tub costs $2 which seems rather greedy on the restauranteur's part. Meals are served on plastic plates with an accompanying plastic fork - my wife went to enquire about a knife for each of us but was told they don't supply knives which then made eating our meal a most interesting culinary experience indeed. Again, a rather mean lack of Basic service we thought.

Moreover, the outdoor eating area could do with a good high-pressure water clean and the tables a thorough wipe-down as they seemed very poorly maintained and lacking in basic hygiene. The birds which fly in an and out certainly don't help.

It is highly unlikely that we would go back as we were very unimpressed with a number of the basics as well as the false advertising in our opinion.

“Certainly not the best fish and chips in NSW”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2013

This cafe promotes itself as the best fish and chips in NSW. It most certainly is not. The way it is achieving this is quite underhanded. When you order your fish and chips they advise you that for every vote you make for them, they'll give you an extra serve of calamari. If you want good fish and chips go to Balmoral or Manly in Sydney. This place is expensive and overrrated.
