Reviewed January 4, 2014

Apologies for the very late review, we have just decided to review all of the places we have been to so far together. We stayed in the Edge Villa for three nights in April 2012 for our 2 yr anniversary and absolutely loved our stay here, it was relaxing and peaceful. We ordered dinner on the first night which was an amazing sushi dish followed by a roast and a refreshing cocktail, great way to start the trip. As part of our stay / package, we also went hot air ballooning in Byron Bay which is definitely recommended, (this was with Byron Bay Ballooning - very professional and friendly).

The bedroom was upstairs and once you pulled the blinds back there was a magnificent view right from the bed. The location is picturesque overlooking the mountains and valleys and you can even see the ocean. We had massages and reiki done on the balcony which was also very relaxing. The place was around 10mins drive from town and at night can be a bit daunting as the GPS didn’t seem to pick up the location very well.

We went to a fantastic French restaurant while staying here which we highly recommend; La Table. The owners also own a sushi restaurant in town which we visited there during our stay which had really yummy sushi. We also visited Crystal Castle which was so beautiful and peaceful and had amazing Crystals throughout. We found the local village very friendly and in particular the lolly shop down there. Sammy the dog added character to Koonyum and would come over every morning to say good morning and sunbake on the chairs with us; we loved having him around so much so that we wanted to take him home with us!

Another great stay at Koonyum Range Retreat. This was our second visit to the Koonyum Villa after our Elopement in February. We were so happy to share this special place with some of our family who couldn't make it to celebrate our wedding.
We were all amazed again with the tea and platter on arrival, the views, the spa, the tranquil location and cuddles with Sammy the dog.
We will definitely be back again and again

Dear Matt & Jen,

Thanks for your continued support. It’s always so nice to have such lovely repeat guests as yourselves. I wanted to let you know that the Koonyum villa now has a proper table and 4 chairs (as per your feedback) for the outdoor dining area in addition to the beautiful lounges.

We are growing our own vegetables and have lots of exciting menu changes regularly. Sammy is now a house dog, so you’ll need to request a visit with him for cuddles ☺

Maybe see you on your anniversary!

All the best, Miki & Piari

Spent our 1st year anniversary at the retreat, and it was an excellent choice for us. Away from the hustle and bustle of Byron Bay, quiet with views to last a lifetime, it was just what we needed. Sam the dog was so gorgeous and good company and we actually miss him. The breakfast hamper that was included in the price was of top quality. We also bought the nibblies tray which we thought was expensive but it was also top notch and crazy good. The bed in The Edge was THE most comfortable I have ever laid in. With the view in the room, lying on the bed felt like sleeping on air. Oh and we cannot forget the jacuzzi, how good was it! Learnt that the owner built it herself, and we spent some time to appreciate that fact! Spent a lot of time in there. Wonderful memories. A bit too expensive for us, but for a one-off special occasion it was well worth it.

I recently got married at Koonyum Range Retreat and want to start by saying that it was the perfect destination four our intimate wedding. My husband and I booked the house and two of the villas for our 22 guests, each of whom would have loved to stay longer to soak up the sun and absorb the amazing views of the bay and hinterland.
In the lead up to the wedding, I liaised with the delightful owners and caretakers, who accommodated my every need. They allowed me to visit the property on a number of occasions prior to the big day and, at every step, they made me feel welcome and at ease.
My mum has been in the tourism industry for over a decade and has travelled widely and even she was blown away by the view, the hospitality of the owners and the cleanliness of the amazing house and surrounds. If given my time again, there is nothing that I would change, except to extend the length of my stay, as three nights was far from long enough to wake up to the sun rising over the bay and the shadows dancing on the escarpment.
I can't wait to return to Koonyum in the near future--perhaps for our first year wedding anniversary. Thank you again for making my wedding the most enjoyable day of my life.

We stayed in the lotus villa for 1 night when I proposed to my now fiance. The staff were fantastic providing me with all the information I needed to plan for the big occasion. They were extremely prompt to respond to all my emails and phone calls and organised everything for me...chauffeur, massages, champagne, luxury dinner and a wonderful breakfast. I highly recommend the Lotus Villa for privacy and luxury. The views were stunning and felt like we had the whole Byron Bay Hinterland to ourselves. Although the full package was pricey (in my opinion), I'm very happy with the experience and encorouge anyone to stay there for a special occasion or just a great experience.

Before I write this I will let you know that I did give the owners an opportunity to address the issues however they manage to skirt around some of the issues so here I am. This was our annual 2 night get away for our regular group of 12. Each year we have turns at finding a spot. This year was our turn. Found Koonyum Retreat and it read well and looked amazing. We rented the "house" in late August 2013. For the price ($3000 and that is off season and $1500 bond) we paid we expected not just a view but an eye for detail. On arrival we were greeted by a young girl who showed us around the property and noise restrictions were explained. All good except the pool was full of leaves and it was supposed to be an infinity pool featured and boasted about on the website but the water level was down about 15cm so no infinity effect happening there. Very disappointing! We requested the pool be cleaned so the automatic cleaner was put in which we took out the next day.
Next issue was the cleanliness...bugs, moths and cobwebs behind blinds, big handprints all over the stainless steel flu in the kitchen, fireplace full of ash and the glass was filthy. So disturbed was one of our guys that he cleaned it himself. BBQ was not up to par either.
Next was the oven....Part of our weekends away is to cook up a storm so the oven needed to be in good working order. Not so! The door was held closed by a makeshift latch which really was not adequate as the heat kept escaping so all our cooking times were way out meaning meals were delayed. Quite annoying.
Next was the fact that the owners/caretakers actually move into the house next door when the main house is rented. It would be my understanding that if we rent that house for 2 nights that we would not be disturbed. Even though we had the noise restrictions explained to us, whilst waiting for dinner to cook Friday night we get a knock at the door at about 8pm. Someone different this time to explain the noise restrictions again! We new about the noise stopping by 10pm and about closing doors as to not disturb the people staying in the villas, which are right next door to the house and the noise carrying down the valley below. Totally unnecessary as we are a bunch of over 50's and quite responsible. If one disturbance wasn't enough on the Saturday the caretaker came to the house AGAIN needing to get into the office....quite inappropriate!!!! If I had realised that the privacy was going to be an issue we probably wouldn't have booked under those circumstances.
All in all the house itself is architecturally lovely and the position is beautiful but at that price it really needs to be in tip top condition with amentities spotless and in good working order. I do have photos of the problem areas but feel this review is enough. Unfortunately it needs some TLC and cannot rely on the position to be the main focus. Come on guys you have something amazing, nurture it!

Room Tip: For a large group the house is quite adequate.

Thank you for your feedback and photos which we always welcome in order to improve our service and experience for future guests, I am sorry that out initial response to your original e mail, along with our offer of a discount on a future stay was not found to be satisfactory.

We agree with you that we have something amazing that needs to be nurtured and pride ourselves on the amount of time we and our staff (all of whom are professional and above 30 years old) invest in improving, cleaning and communicating with all our guests. Since your stay with us and feedback we have addressed these specific issues with our cleaners to ensure that they are not repeated.

As you can understand noise is always a sensitive issue when we have other guests staying on the property. The main house is of a substantial size with plenty of different entertaining areas to be enjoyed inside and out. As mangers we need to ensure that everyone has an equally pleasurable experience of Koonyum Range and we only asked that you be sensitive of the neighbouring villas by ensuring the Eastern windows and doors remained closed, especially at night. In order to maintain our high level of service to all our guests across the Retreat including our guest villas, we do of course have staff on site at all times. However, I don't feel that your privacy was intruded upon as we phoned first (which was not answered) in regard to the noise on Friday evening and then knocked on the door. On Saturday morning we only came down as most of you were leaving to go out for the day, to ask if we could access the office for an emergency electrical repair.

At the time of your stay my Office Manager, who you refer to in your review, was on site for the weekend (in the villa 200 meters away) and commented on how friendly your group was and what a great time you had. She had believed that her communication with you was open & friendly and was very surprised that you saw this as a negative aspect of your stay.

Again, please accept my apology that your stay did not meet your high expectations, but we can only move forward and ensure that all our future guests enjoy a higher level of satisfaction with their stay.

We stayed at the Edge villa for four nights and really enjoyed our stay. The spa was lovely the rooms earthy and clean and really well decorated. If you want somewhere to get away from it all and have time to just be with each other and reflect this is the place.
The views are just exquisite.
Thanks for the experience we will definitely be back!

Room Tip: We loved the edge villa
