Nine of us staying over a weekend in March '13 visited The River for dinner. It is a very pleasant One Hat restaurant and the food was good if not a bit sparse. Well presented, fresh and a very nice atmosphere and attentive staff.

But, why do a lot of restaurants these days serve up the main meal without vegetables and or salads and charge extra for them. As a member of the Wine and Food Society, I deplore this ;'modern' trend to charge extra for food which should always be served as part of the main meal!

The tendency for restaurants to also charge 'like the Light Brigade for bottles and glasses of wine when the retail prices are about two-thirds less than the restaurant prices is something that needs to be addressed. It is a rip-off!

However, in favour of The River was the atmosphere and the attentive staff and well presented food. Cost was Sydney priced..about $130 for two being entree, mains and dessert plus 4 glasses of wine.

Nice spot to have a quiet lunch, overlooking the Moruya River on the New South Wales South Coast. Nice seafood.

We went to the local produce night and were again delighted with this different angle for what is already a very good restaurant. The added bonus is that on Friday nights they allow BYO so were able to take a good bottle of wine from our cellar to match the good food. We would in fact go to The River more often, and pay the corkage price + if only we could take our own wine on Saturday nights as well.

The food was again excellent, appetiser of chilled gazpacho with deep fried local oyster was very good. The hazelnut crumbed crispy duck entree was the 2nd best dish of the evening, and the pan fried ling with eden bug filled zucchini flower and lobster velouté main was really tasty and was our pick of the night.

We were thinking another five star meal until the dessert arrived. A pear and almond tart with pear sorbet did not hit the mark. Pear has a texture which does not lend itself to a smooth sorbet, and the tart was just not well put together. Large pieces of pear surrounded by too much pastry. It could have beed done better with more pear sliced and constructed like a tarte tatin with caramelised pear pieces. It could also have benefited from a dollop of clotted cream perhaps?

The service was very good. The young wait staff clearly take pride in the restaurant and do their job well. We could find a few minor details with their work, but that would be nit-picky and we are sure they are improving all of the time. We certainly appreciate their attitude and effort very much.

We will be back again, I think we have been to The River over eight times so we obviously like it.
