“Up there with the best”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 11, 2011

We spent two weeks on Lord Howe in November and spent time at Capella Lodge and also at Arajilla ( see Arajilla).
Without repeating previous reviewers, the contributions by familyof997, AliceHaemmerle and JodieTravel01 are spot on.
Additional comments I would make are:
We had a lagoon loft for three nights and a Suite for three nights. I am not sure the extra cost is worth it if you are going to out and about all the time. Both were very comfortable. The views are slightly better from the Loft and the bathroom is better.
Capella is on the southern end of the island and it was really nice to be in a quieter part of the island. The distance was not an issue as the staff would drive you down to town and back whenever you needed. Or it was really easy to walk or cycle. The staff would take us down to do any of the activities which start in town. Then when we were exhausted after snorkeling for hours, come and pick us up.
You do not get the general public in the restaurant which creates a much more friendly atmosphere.
The staff were very good at asking everybody what they were doing for the day and if they had nothing organized would take the time to find something appropriate. The staff were knowledgeable about what to do and how appropriate it would be for your level of fitness.
We are 5 star travelers and would never go back to a place, as we believe there are so many exciting places to go and you should not try to repeat a great holiday. In Capella’s case we would be prepared to make an exception. Only 1hr20 from Sydney, great snorkeling ( better than the Great Barrier Reef) , walking ( North Queensland islands are often too small or rugged and too hot) , cycling ( mostly flat, well maintained bikes), fantastic wild life ( the chicks were hatching while we were there) and superb accommodation ( Capella only).

My partner and I had a well-deserved break at stunning Capella Lodge in November. It took our breath away- having the best location on the island was one thing, but the exceptional friendly service, stylish interiors and incredible attention to detail make this lodge something really special.

My husband and I stayed at Capella with our extended family for 7 nights. All I can say is that it was faultless in every way. The food was sensational, the afternoon canapes and drinks were great, the view from the main deck was stunning, the staff were lovely and very helpful. I would recommend this place for anyone wanting a five star, relaxing getaway.

My family and I visited Capella in December 2010. What is not to like about this place. It is a perfect balance of pristine environment ie (biking (or taking the buggie if you would prefer) down to the beach every morning snorkling amongst the fish 2 metres from the shore on a beach with 10 other people) and 5 star comfort, food and service. The staff are attentive (Robyn and her floor staff and the housekeeping girls were a highlight), the food is amazing and you are made to feel you are a guest in a very lovely home (canapes before dinner , turn down treats and complimentary mini bar were nice touches). Capella has the best location on the island with stunning views out to Mt Gower. It is the only accomodation at that end of the island so there is a real sense of seclusion and privacy. We stayed in the Makambo Loft, which is perfectly geared to families with children. It is on the end and has an upstairs parents retreat with the most spectacular views of Mt Gower. One of our best family holidays ever.

The food is 5 star - better than anything we have eaten in Sydney, Melbourne, NYC and France! Fantastic!
Each member of the staff was attentive and treated us as if we were great friends from the moment we landed.
The spa treatments were excellent!
The island is unparalleled in beauty and there are so many things to do from great walks, snorkelling, swimming, scuba diving, kayaking, biking or just doing absolutely nothing!
We loved every single moment!

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2010

We stayed three nights at Capella Lodge and found everything truly marvelous and well worth the cost. The staff were very helpful, friendly and obliging with any request, any time of the day. The food and wines were very good and the pre-dinner drinks and canapes freely offered a number of times each evening. The whole ethos of Capella Lodge seemed to be one of generosity - a welcoming presentation by one of the Island's leading naturists and historian which was most interesting and informative, generous with time to chat, advise/suggest things to do and see, freely loan a buggy to get about the island, make a cup of coffee anytime we returned from a walk, - nothing was too much trouble and we felt thoroughly spoiled.
Our one criticism is the impost for using a Visa or Mastercard credit card to pay for the booking. This occurs before you arrive and there is a 2.5% fee charged by Capella for this method of payment so that our $3900 cost of stay became $3997.50. The imposition of this $97.50 "fee" felt like we were being gouged for every penny Capella could extract and, as this occurred before we'd even arrived, put us in a very negative mind-set as to what we'd encounter when we got there. We were anticipating one small pre-dinner drink with any more having to be be paid for at top-shelf prices, anything other than our room and breakfast and dinner being at additional cost such as the use of the buggies, etc. We were getting psyched-up to be really picky if that was what we encountered. We found however that this was not the case as detailed above.
So, why does Capella charge this fee? Their merchant fee payable on their Visa or Mastercard credit card transactions is most likely 1% or less (with the exception of Amex which usually charges 2.5%) so why do they insist on taking the gloss off people's expectations of a wonderful time at Capella by imposing a charge over and above what it actually costs them - that is, a $58.50 addition straight to Capella's profit line?
On the other hand, it could be argued that if you're prepared to pay $1300 a night for the two of you what's an extra $32.50 fee per night? However, this is not really about the money per se, it's about the impression it creates and the negative set of expectations that people might bring with them at the start of their stay.
Like most people, we tend to be generous and perhaps more liberal with our money than we at times should be but, again like most people, if we feel we're being ripped-off we don't like it.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review about your recent stay at Capella Lodge. We welcome our guests feedback and we were so pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay this month, and that the generous 'lodging' spirit of staying at Capella was the overiding sentiment. The inclusive rates at Capella do allow an 'at-home' feeling for guests, almost like a holiday house, and it's for this reason guests return year in, year out. We have some guests booked to return for their 8th stay! Thank you for your points regarding the credit card surcharge, and I'm sorry to hear this made you wary of the Capella experience prior to your stay. We do inform guests of the credit card surcharge at the time of enquiry, on the web and on stay confirmation. The way to avoid this charge is to pay by direct deposit, and many of our guests opt for this payment method. The percentage to us is higher than 1%, and in aggregate on inclusive, premium rates this becomes a significant cost. Credit card surcharges are common throughout the tourism industry, including airlines. We do hope to welcome you back for a return stay in the not-too-distant future!
