The food is 5 star - better than anything we have eaten in Sydney, Melbourne, NYC and France! Fantastic!
Each member of the staff was attentive and treated us as if we were great friends from the moment we landed.
The spa treatments were excellent!
The island is unparalleled in beauty and there are so many things to do from great walks, snorkelling, swimming, scuba diving, kayaking, biking or just doing absolutely nothing!
We loved every single moment!

We stayed three nights at Capella Lodge and found everything truly marvelous and well worth the cost. The staff were very helpful, friendly and obliging with any request, any time of the day. The food and wines were very good and the pre-dinner drinks and canapes freely offered a number of times each evening. The whole ethos of Capella Lodge seemed to be one of generosity - a welcoming presentation by one of the Island's leading naturists and historian which was most interesting and informative, generous with time to chat, advise/suggest things to do and see, freely loan a buggy to get about the island, make a cup of coffee anytime we returned from a walk, - nothing was too much trouble and we felt thoroughly spoiled.
Our one criticism is the impost for using a Visa or Mastercard credit card to pay for the booking. This occurs before you arrive and there is a 2.5% fee charged by Capella for this method of payment so that our $3900 cost of stay became $3997.50. The imposition of this $97.50 "fee" felt like we were being gouged for every penny Capella could extract and, as this occurred before we'd even arrived, put us in a very negative mind-set as to what we'd encounter when we got there. We were anticipating one small pre-dinner drink with any more having to be be paid for at top-shelf prices, anything other than our room and breakfast and dinner being at additional cost such as the use of the buggies, etc. We were getting psyched-up to be really picky if that was what we encountered. We found however that this was not the case as detailed above.
So, why does Capella charge this fee? Their merchant fee payable on their Visa or Mastercard credit card transactions is most likely 1% or less (with the exception of Amex which usually charges 2.5%) so why do they insist on taking the gloss off people's expectations of a wonderful time at Capella by imposing a charge over and above what it actually costs them - that is, a $58.50 addition straight to Capella's profit line?
On the other hand, it could be argued that if you're prepared to pay $1300 a night for the two of you what's an extra $32.50 fee per night? However, this is not really about the money per se, it's about the impression it creates and the negative set of expectations that people might bring with them at the start of their stay.
Like most people, we tend to be generous and perhaps more liberal with our money than we at times should be but, again like most people, if we feel we're being ripped-off we don't like it.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review about your recent stay at Capella Lodge. We welcome our guests feedback and we were so pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay this month, and that the generous 'lodging' spirit of staying at Capella was the overiding sentiment. The inclusive rates at Capella do allow an 'at-home' feeling for guests, almost like a holiday house, and it's for this reason guests return year in, year out. We have some guests booked to return for their 8th stay! Thank you for your points regarding the credit card surcharge, and I'm sorry to hear this made you wary of the Capella experience prior to your stay. We do inform guests of the credit card surcharge at the time of enquiry, on the web and on stay confirmation. The way to avoid this charge is to pay by direct deposit, and many of our guests opt for this payment method. The percentage to us is higher than 1%, and in aggregate on inclusive, premium rates this becomes a significant cost. Credit card surcharges are common throughout the tourism industry, including airlines. We do hope to welcome you back for a return stay in the not-too-distant future!

It’s easy to fall in love with Lord Howe Island. Crystal blue water, multiple lovely walks with gorgeous views, quiet and laid back. It’s a unique place. We chose Capella wanting a few nights of pampered luxury. I usually start my reviews in logical sequence e.g. arrival, location etc but in Capella’s case I have to start with the one thing that makes this place special and that’s the service. Arriving on the island by plane we were met by the lovely Libby who runs Capella with her husband Mark. No waiting for baggage to arrive, straight into the people mover and straight to Capella’s deck for canapés and a refreshing drink gazing at stunning views towards Mt Lidgebird and beyond to Mt Gower. Throughout our stay Libby and Mark were the perfect hosts, they clearly have a passion for Lord Howe, enjoy their jobs and one of them was always available from dawn until into the night to talk to guests and answer questions (which they must have been asked a million times before but always answer with good grace and humor) e.g. what are the best walks etc. The girls in the restaurant especially the wonderful Robyn were equally as good. Never did our glasses fall empty, never did we wait for anything, and our room was serviced while we were at breakfast. The people who work at Capella seem happy to be there and that makes a huge difference to the ‘feel’ of the place.
Now back to logical order. Capella is located about 4 km from the town, close to Lovers Bay (secluded beach, nice sunsets). Most guests use the free bikes that are thankfully well maintained to get around, but there are also two golf buggys for hire and Libby and Mark are happy to drop you off and pick you up from anywhere you want to go.
It’s a small resort. Our room was scrupulously clean, had a comfortable king bed and very nice shower with good water pressure. The maps and books about Lord Howe in the room were much appreciated. For the price (and yes I’m being picky) a few extra luxuries would have been nice such as a pillow menu, fluffy bathrobes instead of the cotton variety, extra toiletries etc. We could also hear our neighbors a little bit – mainly due to the wooden floors downstairs.
The food was good (breakfast and lunch are included in the tariff) and many meals were excellent. Breakfast was a cold buffet and a hot selection, probably the best pancakes I’ve ever had plus the freshly squeezed orange juice and good coffee were definite winners. Dinner was great; if you want to you can join Libby, Mark and other guests for canapés and drinks (good wines etc) from 6pm. It was a joy, walking into the warmth of Capella’s lounge and dining room after a day or walking, diving, snorkeling. No need to book dinner, just eat when you want. There were three choices for both entrée and main. The fresh fish dishes were the stars of our four night stay. Desert was two choices and/or a cheese platter, probably not quite as fabulous as the preceding options.
Capella is very close to many lovely walks. There’s heaps of in room information about things to do e.g. snorkeling (Neds is best off the beach but try a boat snorkeling trip and you’ll see some terrific reefs and fish life), scuba diving, round the island trips etc. Every Saturday night, Capella offers a short slide presentation by a visiting naturalist which was interesting and gave us a good insight to the island.
I would happily go back.

Husband and I returned to newly refurbished Capella after 6 years to celebrate Wedding Anniversary and escape the rat race. The lodge suites have been expanded and refurbished. We stayed in a lagoon loft and they are beautiful. I loved the bathrooms (especially nice towels, soaps, loofah etc).

The lodge itself has also been renovated and it is also larger, beautiful and still completely suits the laid back feel of Lord Howe. Food is heavenly (as good as Southern Ocean Lodge). Loved that pretty beach nearby for a dip before breakfast.

Bike riding on roads with no traffic and polite drivers (what a treat)

You can loll around and enjoy the dramatic views or get out and enjoy the bushwalking and beaches. Whichever you choose the staff make sure you are comfortable and just like my last visit nothing is a problem.

Just to make sure we took a drive around. There is still nothing like Capella on the Island
We will return soon to try out the new Lidgbird Pavillion with plunge pool!!!

This is our third trip to Capella and Lord Howe Island: I suppose we're addicts, but we're not looking to be cured... the island has lost none of it's charm and Capella has been refurbished to even higher levels of understated elegance.

This time we were finally inspired to climb Mt Gower, and it wasn't as bad as it looks...we had a beautiful dry sunny day (end of October) and managed to get up and DOWN, which is actually harder. The feeling of accomplishment is great, and the perfect justification for massages and lounging around the next day!

We really feel that Capella's location at the South end of the island is perfect: better views, lots of great walks and beaches nearby, yet the center of "town" is only minutes away by bike or golf-cart (Capella now has two). The food continues to be outstanding, the wines excellent, and Mark and Libby and their team make us feel so welcome! Mark has even been known to help push guests up Mt Gower!

We cannot understand why there isn't a long waiting list to get to LHI given its proximity to the mainland..the island is just so beautiful, a very special place. This island should be at the head of everyone's "must-do" list.

We went to Lord Howe Island in May 2009, and stayed at the Capella Lodge for our one year wedding anniversary. Capella Lodge is just brilliant. Excellent service and really friendly staff. Beautiful setting on the island, with stunning views of the mountains from the dining room and lounge areas. Our room was lovely, facilities all great. And the food is just to die for - breakfast, lunch and dinner never disappointed - top end food, and not in small quantities! Everything was great, I really can't recommend this place enough, it was such an amazing holiday. (Just as a note, Lord Howe Island itself is a must-visit, it is the most beautiful place I have ever been).
